Chris Wilcox fined $25K by NBA for flipping off Kiss Cam
NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson announced on Sunday the league’s decision to fine Chris Wilcox $25,000 for “making an obscene gesture directed toward fans” during Friday’s 95-94 overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Chris Wilcox flipped off his middle finger at the fans during a timeout in the fourth quarter, with the score tied at 71 between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. Ironically, Chris Wilcox wasn’t even on court when the incident occurred – which wasn’t captured on the nationally televised game broadcast and was reserved only for the eye of Well Fargo Center audiences.
The Philadelphia 76ers have a tradition of showing visiting team’s bench on the Kiss Cam. While everyone joins in the laugh and the joke is taken lightly by both parties, Chris Wilcox took matters to an extreme probably still boiling over from a verbal showdown with a fan.
As the Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner took to the free-throw line with 8:47 minutes remaining in the game, several members on the Boston Celtics bench including Chris Wilcox could be seen exchanging words with fans seated behind the team’s bench. One of the fans was cupping his hands yelling something across to Chris Wilcox. Right before Evan Turner took the second free-throw shot, Boston Celtics assistant coach Tyronn Lue walked over to Chris Wilcox that set him straight for a while.
Initially, an in-house camera captured Chris Wilcox sitting next to teammate Jared Sullinger on the bench for the Kiss Cam. Instead of laughing off the harmless joke Chris Wilcox flipped his finger at the camera with hostility as it featured the image on the Jumbo Tron. Chris Wilcox’s gesture was met with a lot of boos from fans.
The 30-year-old Chris Wilcox scored with four points, two rebounds and one assist playing 15 minutes in the game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Chris Wilcox is in his second-year with the Boston Celtics, averaging 4.5 points, 2.3 rebounds while playing 13.1 minutes per game of the bench this season. The 11-year NBA veteran Chris Wilcox has also played with the Los Angeles Clippers, Seattle SuperSonics, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons through his career.
The Boston Celtics have Chris Wilcox on a one-year veteran’s minimum contract ($1.35 million) for this season.
This is the second fine the Boston Celtics have received from the NBA this season. Boston Celtics big man Kevin Garnett was previously fined $25,000 for his involvement in an on-court scuffle with the Brooklyn Nets in November, while guard Rajon Rondo received two games suspension in the same incident.
