Clemens Congressional Hearing: Elijah Cummings Helps Us Put This To Bed
READ MORE:
MLB

One final last post on this mess, if you'll bear with me. We have to put this thing to bed before officially moving on to spring training. Did I mention PITCHERS AND CATCHERS reported yesterday!

Unintended humor highlight - Unfortunately I couldn't find video of this, before the very first exchange between Cummings and Clemens (not the one above) provided the best laugh of the day. After Rep. Cummings outlined what Andy Pettitte has testified, Clemens replied with his first of many, "I think he must have mishead." To which my man Elijah responds with, "I'm sorry, I can't hear you."

Party lines disgusting Most disappointing of all was the obvious sides the party lines took. Another embarrassing  moment for our government. Anywho ...

Rep. Dan Burton He had every reason in the world to attack Brian McNamee, and he could very well be right with his assessment, but what an awful display. To use his term, disgusting, would be summarize his display. Indiana, I hope you're proud.

Andy Pettitte only winner In case you have nothing but time, here's his full deposition. One thing was clear yesterday that I think all congressmen and women believe: they believe Pettitte and Knoblauch.

Clemens should have brought chapstick Just sayin'.

Final conclusion: As expected, very little will come of this. But in the end Elijah Cummings said it best above. To Roger Clemens: "I hate to say this. You're one of my heroes. But I'm having a hard time believing you." Brian McNamee isn't the most credible person in the world, most drug dealers aren't (I've heard), but that fact Chuck Knoblauch, Andy Pettitte and even Roger's wife have admitted to HGH use corroborating with his testimony lead me to believe he's telling the truth in regards to Roger's use.

Roger's testimony yesterday was filled with stories about his youth, his playing for the USA team, and a lot of misremembering. McNamee's was filled with admissions of guilt, admission to some lies, and most of all just answers. He didn't need any consultation from his lawyers. Roger's lying, but we knew that already.

"Misremembers" is the new "I'm not here to talk about the past."

And with that, let's not talk about the past anymore. Yeah, spring training.

Roger threw everyone under the bus and took no responsibility for his own actions at any point. It's Andy Pettitte who is mistaken (misremembered, an actual word, and my new favorite word). It's his wife who used HGH. It's McNamee who is lying.

CF, I said a couple months ago that I would let this thing play out before I would make a judgment. I realize Clemens probably did use PEDS, but not because of what McNamee has said... rather because of Pettitte's deposition and affidavit. I believe Pettitte to be credible.

Dan Burton also needs to get off his high horse about McNamee's history of lying, when he himself is a notorious skirt-chaser. Burton cheated on his first wife and had a child with a former state employee in 1983... he refused to actually see his son (although, at least he did cut a check for the kid). He didn't admit to it until 1998.

Good insight. Wow.

I love how Burton is shocked, SHOCKED that Brian McNamee has a less than credible past. Um, sir, 1) he was a part of baseball in the 90s 2) he's a drug dealer. What were you expecting?

In my opinion with the exception of Andy,  they both lied.  This is about politics now.  When I heard Clemens received a call from President Bush Sr., I was done.  Baseball hero, Republican and Texan.  Doesn't matter about the syringes forget the chain of custody, no one can prove that Clemens knew that he was being injected in HGH!  Clemens will walk and I assume Bonds will fry! Just one question to all... Is baseball the national past time... Or is it lying?

I'll start by saying I am a Yankees fan and a huge Andy Pettitte fan.  However, why is he any more believable then the next?  Because he swore under oath?  So did Clemens.  Pettitte is an illegal drug user as well.  His "character" would be just as suspect as the rest of them.

That being said, I think Clemens might be going too far.  I cannot guarantee he used anything, as I didn't personally inject him, however I am sure that a court, not public opinion or a congressional committee should pass ultimate judgement.  Overall, this story needs to fade into oblivion (bolivia if Mike Tyson is reading).

In general, I think America cares way less about steroids then the media/congress wants to believe.  All-Star football players have and will, in the future, be suspended for steroid use and we will look away.  Football is or will become the most popular sport and people don't care about drug use it appears.  Baseball needs to accept the facts and move on.  Suspend those future users severely, however the past is the past.
