As much or more than anyone else, I revel in Duke basketball hiccups and generally root for their demise. But as much as I despise the Dukies, I respect the hell out of Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K is the reason for the Blue Devils remarkable success and damn him for it. I'd be lying, as would most fans who "hate" Duke, if I didn't admit that most of being a Duke hater is the result of jealousy. Don't get me wrong, bogus home court officiating, Dukie V and Mike Patrick all have contributed greatly to the hater movement, but it's the consistent winning above all else.
With that consistent success over many, many years Krzyewski is now approaching a couple major milestones. Saturday at North Carolina State, Coach K will likely record his 800th career win. At 61 years of age and in good health, you can bet the he'll pass his mentor in 4 years to become the winningest men's basketball coach in history.
But here's a bigger question: Do you think K can get to 1,000? Let's map it out.
2008: I'm going to put Duke down for 9 more wins this year. Win the ACC Tourney, bow out in the elite eight. (808)
2009: Every reason to believe they'll be equally good next year. Let's conservatively say 28 wins. (836)
2010: Nolan Smith, Tyler King and Kyle Singler (my guess is he stays) as juniors with what's inevitably some very talented freshman. I'll go 32 wins. (868)
2011: You took 5th grade math so you hopefully can see that Coach K could very fittingly enter the Final Four in '11 in search of breaking Bobby Knight's record. That would take a special season. Let's go with 28 just be conservative. (996)
2012: No reason to believe Coach K would retire this soon (age 65), so he'll easily pass Knight before ACC play begins and lets give him another 30 wins. (926)
74 wins left would take three more seasons. Do you think Mike Krzyzewski can pass 1,000? Will he last that long? You can be sure that whatever total K ends up with it will never be passed.
