It's far too early to engage in any meaningful debates about college basketball rankings, but with it being a quiet week due to exams I thought we'd see what the fan consensus is on the top teams.Like the pollsters, I've got North Carolina on top. The more Ty Lawson plays and contributes the better off the Tar Heels will be. I expect UNC to remain #1 well into January with the next marginally tough test being Clemson on the 6th.
Based on preseason expectations, no team has impressed me more than the Dukies, which is why I've got them at #2. It doesn't matter who they throw out there, Coack K makes sure the spread the court impecably well which leads to one of the most efficient offenses so far.
3. Kansas - Only a 4-point win over Arizona in OT, but I think we've seen how good the Wildcats can be when pushed.
4. Texas - Next to Duke among those I didn't think we be this good. Watchout for a letdown next Tuesday against Oral Roberts while looking ahead to Michigan State.
5. UCLA - Not concerned about home loss to Texas. Final four team.
6. Memphis - Arguably the most talented team, but I don't think they've played their best yet. Next Saturday vs Georgetown will provide a better barometer.
7. Georgetown - See above for big game measuring stick. My preseason national title pick isn't flashy, but long term I still like the Hoyas/
8. Michigan State - Back-to-back road wins at Bradley and BYU was impressive for a team playing the most freshman minutes in the country (of top teams).
9. Washington State - If you just look at scores, you likely unimpressed so far. Try scoring on them.
10. Pittsburgh - See above. Probably the team I've overrated the most.
Mid-Majors I'm watching closely:
Dayton - Wow, did they look good on Saturday at Louisville. And by they, I mean Brian Roberts.
Miami (OH) - Rick Pitino said his 47-44 win was the hardest of his 30 year coaching career. Being a bit of a homer here, but this is the best Miami team since my freshman year with Wally Szczerbiak. Only losses to the aforementioned Dayton, USC, and Xavier.
St. Mary's (CA) - Still undefeated, plays at Texas Jan 5th.
Drake - Only loss is to St. Mary's. Might be a sleeper in the MVC.
Feel free to share your thoughts on the season so far and your rankings as we catch our breath before some big games over the holidays.
