College Basketball Saturday Open Thread: Can Beasley Deliver?
READ MORE:

This isn't technically March Madness, but the calendar has flipped and I bet we see increased urgency and intensity from all games today. And a beastly slate of games we have in front of us:

Duke at North Carolina State - Noon (CBS) - Coach K goes for 800
Pittsburgh at Syracuse - Noon (ESPN) - Must win for 'Cuse
Georgetown at Marquette - 2 (CBS) - Gus Johnson is calling the game. Must watch listen.
Texas A&M at Oklahoma - 2 (ESPN)
North Carolina at Boston College - 3:30 (ABC)
Reg: Mississippi State at Florida or Texas at Texas Tech - 4 (CBS)
Washington State at Stanford - 4 (FSN)

Lastly, Kansas State at Kansas tonight (9, ESPN) where Michael Beasley tries to seal the deal of his bold prediction early this season. If the Wildcats win, not only will they guarantee a spot in the dance, Beasley's going to have to try and convince the Jayhawks to meet him in Africa. Unfortunately, I don't think they're going to be able to overcome the Phog Allen Fieldhouse effect. As I mentioned earlier this week, I'd love to see KSU really slow the tempo and do whatever it takes to get Beasley the ball on every possession. Get Jackson and Arthur in some foul trouble and they could keep in close.

Just got home from work and I'm a little shocked to see Duke down by 13 in the second half @ NC State with the teams at the under 12 minute time out.

Missed free throws down the stretch by North Carolina State and big shots made by Duke helps the Blue Devils win by a point.  Coach K gets win #800

... and that horrible call at the end of the game, but what else is new. That was an obvious hook by Nelson, that was somehow called a blocking foul despite there being no body contact.

It's inevitable this G'Town-Marquette game will go down to the buzzer with Gus calling it.

I hate you ABC. Why was it necessary to show the last 5 seconds of that already over Arena Football league and then go into commercials.

16-2, BC. Fantastic...

I just hope G-Town has 20+ turnovers next week when Louisville travels to DC.

I think Gus has been dying to use the word "ubiquitous" all day, and he finally had his chance.

Lawson just entered in the game.

OMG, Rice has five three's already. Make that six in the first six minutes.

Rice has 23 points in the first 7 minutes of the game. Someone kill me.

How dare you imply that in a close game the calls will go Duke's way

Holy (*$#$!

23? That's absurd.

By the way, the official "The Ruuuunneer!" counts today is at 4 and growing.

Jason, you called the Marquette/G=town game right.  G-town down by three, and Marquette fouled G-town BEHIND the three point line with just a couple of seconds left.  G-town hit first two shots.

Tied ball game, 2.8 seconds left.

YES, more Gus Johnson ... and hoops. Classic way to start March.

I am actually nervous/excited about the outcome of this game.  It's ALMOST as if my team were actually on the floor.  But if G-town loses...Louisville is in sole possession of first place in the Big East...

Great game in the Big East and it looks like Rice will only have around 30 at half time. Hopefully. Either way Carolina looks awful on BOTH ends of the floor.

Looks like even overtime will come down to the wire.

Such an anti-climatic ending to such a great game. Even Gus couldn't help it.

Damn, in the first half, Rice was more unconscious than Matt Causey the other night.  34 points on 8-10 shooting from behind the arc.  Rice is a good player, but that's absurd for one half.

BTW, I still think UNC comes back and wins this.  BC is an awful team.

34 points in one half?!?  My God, that is insane.

I was surprised to hear that Rice only had 2 three pointers in conference play before this game. What was he saving it all for this game?

Ellington is way to streaky. Plays well for three games, goes away for four. Give me consistency!

I'm not going to look it up game-by-game, but if that stat is true, that's insane.  He's averaging 2 made 3's per game on the whole season.

Edit:  I lied, I had to look it up with how absurd that stat sounded.  In the last 3 games alone, he's hit 6 3-pointers.  I didn't need to look back any further than that, obviously.  Maybe you heard the announcers say that he has been averaging 2/game during conference play?

I'll look it up. Maybe I mis-heard because that stat does sound wrong.

You might not have mis-heard.  I was watching an Iowa State game on ESPN this last week (I think), and ESPN showed a graphic that said Rahshon Clark was the 3rd player in Big XII history to have 1000 points 1000 rebounds , 1000 3-pointers, 100 assists and 1000 blocked shots.  They screw up more often than we realize.

I have to be wrong because he has 9 three's in the last five games, all conference games.

Rice opens the half with two quick baskets. 38.

WEEZY! Lead down to six.

Great comeback from North Carolina and I must say that Lawson played really well in the second half. Especially his defense on Rice for the earlier parts before Roy put Ginyard on him. I fully expect Lawson to play near his average against FSU, the team that injured him, on Monday.

Very impressed with Stanford for most of the second half against Washington State. I was a bit high on the Cougars earlier in the season, but I still believe that they are a team that could make a surprising Elite Eight run and Stanford took over. Still not sure what to think about Stanford though.

Also looks like Tech might hang on and win against Texas.

Lol, or maybe not. What a comeback from Texas, or should I say collapse from Tech?

What an ending. As a fan of basketball, fouling when it's a three point game kind of ruins the ending. The way this game ended was insane even with the foul.
