I generally like College Football News, if for no other reason there's content available when I want to satisfy my itch. That said, I think they go way too far out of there way to be different just to make a statement and come across looking ridiculous. Other the other hand, considering I'm going to link to them and bash their latest rankings, I suppose they're doing a good job. The CFN staff published their Offensive Unit Rankings last week and they're offensive enough that I feel the need to single them out. Let's go through the top 10 shall we:
1. Louisville - Sure, that makes sense. I'd go with USC and Michigan over the Cardinals but Louisville definitely has a top tier offense this season despite the loss of two solid running backs. However, without a truly decent defense in the Big East, the Cardinals statistics get inflated and this is the result. Overrating.
2. USC I don't think an explanation is needed here.
3. Oklahoma The Wolverines should be ... wait, what? The Sooners? 3rd best offense in the country or the Big XII? Yes I know Malcom Kelly is outstanding and DeMarco Murray looks legit, but you simply can't make a good case for Oklahoma this high when quarterback is such a question mark. I'd have struggled to place the Sooners 3rd in their own conference, let alone the nation.
4. Michigan Chad Henne, Mike Hart, Mario Manningham, Jake Long, Adam Kraus. What else are you looking for CFN?
5. Texas Plenty of talent, sounds good.
6. California Showing a lot of confidence in Nate Longhsore to come to this conclusion, but DeSean Jackson almost makes this seem reasonable by himself.
7. Wisconsin Dumbfounded. Wait until you see a team that trails the Badgers in these rankings. I'm as high as anyone on Wisconsin, I think they'll seriously contend for the Big Ten and go to a BCS bowl. BUT, I don't think it's the result of an upper echelon offense.
8. Texas A&M Don't really agree, but let's move on to the my biggest beef with these rankings ...
9. West Virginia Do you think there is a single Defensive Coordinator in the country that would rather face the Mountaineers offense than Wisconsin's? Pat White and Steve Slaton are the only two reasons you need to put WVU into the top 3.
Other notable ranking malfunctions:
- Missouri at 11, Florida at 12?
- Miami 25, Arkansas at 26?
- Hawaii at 23 - even though they don't play against a defense, they're still good.
I'd sure love for you Sooner fans to make me a case why they'll be among the best three offenses. These rankings are truly awful.
