New Mexico State athletic director McKinley Boston announced Wednesday afternoon that the football program will go Independent in 2013, reports Eddie Timanus of USA Today.Blog Photo - College Football: New Mexico State to Join Independents

In an open letter titled "Conference Update," Timanus confirmed that the Aggies will join Notre Dame, BYU, Army, Navy, and fellow Western Athletic Conference counterpart Idaho.

"NMSU is committed to continuing at the Division I level and we are committed to our football program," Boston wrote. "...Even though our football program will be independent in 2013, NMSU will remain a WAC member in all other sports."

Both New Mexico State and Idaho were hoping for an invite to the Mountain West Conference, but when the phone never rang, they decided to give up and become a nomad for a little while.

It was either that or head back to the FCS — and for NMSU, that'd be like going back to your crazy ex-girlfriend after attaining a restraining order and then moving across the country.

Boston also added that he has already scheduled nine of 12 games, which already include five home matchups. This is a big step for the program, as it is already worlds ahead of Idaho.

Hopefully those games include Akron, FAU, South Alabama, Massachusetts, and UTSA so the Aggies have a shot at their first winning season since 2002.
