From my eyes, 2007 was wildly entertaining due to many upsets and a remarkable competitiveness among the elite tier of programs. That trend should continue in 2008 with many of the top teams getting even better next fall. Many in the MSM have put forth Top 25's already for '08, a couple here and here that I tend to agree with, but I'm not going to do that. First of all, LSU should be preseason #1. It's always been my opinion that national champion should stay there until proven otherwise. Secondly, there's a lot of recruiting left and lastly possible defections to the NFL looming. Here's the teams that will be even better causing yet another cluster-f in the polls.
Georgia - Matt Stafford grew tremendously this season, and a full time dose of Knowshon Moreno is going to be scary. Most of that fierce defense you saw during the Sugar Bowl massacre are back, and quite a few were freshman or sophomores. You have to like Georgia's chance in the SEC, while facing an early test against Arizona State in September.
Oklahoma - Sam Bradford has his unfortunate Fiesta Bowl performance to build on. Let's not forget he led the nation in efficiency as a freshman. Could have an even better defense with or without NFL defections.
USC - Different year, same talent. Mark Sanchez or Mitch Mustain at QB, it shouldn't matter all that much. Joe McKnight could be a dark horse for the Heisman. Seriously.
Florida - Just imagine if they had a good defense this year? That's why next year will look like. Tebow and Harvin won't be stopped.
Ohio State - Sorry Big Ten haters, but this was supposed to the Buckeyes down year. Will be a threat again to lose in the National Championship game.
West Virginia - An early pick to make the BCS championship game. Not necessarily the best team, but I see few trip ups on their schedule with Pat White, Steve Slaton and Noel Devine. Early prediction: Devine out-rushes Slaton.
Kansas - Much like Mangino at an all-you-can-eat Buffet, the Jayhawks won't be going anywhere. Reesing returns, as do many talented defensive players. Loss of Talib hurts, but I think they'll be even better.
Other teams also improving: Missouri, Arizona State, Clemson, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, Illinois.
Sleepers who could be next year's Kansas: South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Michigan State (I know, I know, but their '07 was very similar to Kansas' '06).
