College Football: Not Satisfied With 2007 Season? 2008 Should Be Even More Competitive
READ MORE:
Surprisingly, there seems to be a growing sentiment that the 2007 college football season was one of the worst ever. The reason for this is that we had a 2-loss National Champion, which is apparently a bad thing. Never mind that college basketball's champion routinely isn't the one with the least losses and generally has 5-6-7 to their credit.

From my eyes, 2007 was wildly entertaining due to many upsets and a remarkable competitiveness among the elite tier of programs. That trend should continue in 2008 with many of the top teams getting even better next fall. Many in the MSM have put forth Top 25's already for '08, a couple here and here that I tend to agree with, but I'm not going to do that. First of all, LSU should be preseason #1. It's always been my opinion that national champion should stay there until proven otherwise. Secondly, there's a lot of recruiting left and lastly possible defections to the NFL looming. Here's the teams that will be even better causing yet another cluster-f in the polls.

Georgia - Matt Stafford grew tremendously this season, and a full time dose of Knowshon Moreno is going to be scary. Most of that fierce defense you saw during the Sugar Bowl massacre are back, and quite a few were freshman or sophomores. You have to like Georgia's chance in the SEC, while facing an early test against Arizona State in September.

Oklahoma - Sam Bradford has his unfortunate Fiesta Bowl performance to build on. Let's not forget he led the nation in efficiency as a freshman. Could have an even better defense with or without NFL defections.

USC - Different year, same talent. Mark Sanchez or Mitch Mustain at QB, it shouldn't matter all that much. Joe McKnight could be a dark horse for the Heisman. Seriously.

Florida - Just imagine if they had a good defense this year? That's why next year will look like. Tebow and Harvin won't be stopped.

Ohio State - Sorry Big Ten haters, but this was supposed to the Buckeyes down year. Will be a threat again to lose in the National Championship game.

West Virginia - An early pick to make the BCS championship game. Not necessarily the best team, but I see few trip ups on their schedule with Pat White, Steve Slaton and Noel Devine. Early prediction: Devine out-rushes Slaton.

Kansas
- Much like Mangino at an all-you-can-eat Buffet, the Jayhawks won't be going anywhere. Reesing returns, as do many talented defensive players. Loss of Talib hurts, but I think they'll be even better.

Other teams also improving: Missouri, Arizona State, Clemson, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, Illinois.

Sleepers who could be next year's Kansas: South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Michigan State (I know, I know, but their '07 was very similar to Kansas' '06).

Kansas will come back down to reality with games @Oklahoma and against Texas. Also don't forget Texas, as much as it kills me to put that. The Big 12 will have 4 or 5 teams in the Preseason top 15. Next season could be the year that people say the Big 12 is as good/strong/deep whatever adjective you with the SEC.

not with Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas St. stinking up the joint.  They will be good, no doubt, but not as deep as the SEC.

Baylor and Iowa St. will be bad but Kansas St. showed promise until they fell off at the end of the year. The Big 12 South will be the best division in all of College Football.

Next to the SEC East, you mean.

Texas - about the same
Oklahoma - better
Texas A&M - down for a year (i think)
Oklahoma St - still mediocre
Baylor - Still Baylor
Texas Tech - Probably better

That doesn't scream out best conference at all.

  • I know Michigan is losing a lot, but if they get Tyrelle Pryor I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did very well last year.
  • I think Illinois will take a step back next year.  Zook will be in danger of losing his job again, but then respond in 2009.
  • Wisconsin should be better but we were supposed to suck a year ago and kick ass this year.  It didn't quite happen that way.
  • Way too early national championship pick : Georgia vs. West Virginia - you know Bulldog fans will really want that win.

SEC East:

Florida - Better
Georgia - About to same as they were at the end of the year
Tennessee - Down year
Vanderbilt - Still Vanderbilt
Kentucky - Big step down
South Carolina - Maybe better

Almost a push between the two, I'd give an edge to the Big 12 South for a couple reasons: 1) I am a little of a homer, 2) The bottom of the East doesn't look better than the bottom of the South.

Here's how I'd rank those teams combined:

Georgia
Florida
Oklahoma
Texas
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas Tech
Texas A&M
Kentucky
Oklahoma State
Vanderbilt
Baylor

Edge, not by a lot, but an edge to the SEC East.

If it was smart to play tough teams in College Football, a great series of home & homes would be:

Oklahoma vs. Florida
Texas vs. Georgia
South Carolina vs. Texas Tech
Tennessee vs. Texas A&M
Oklahoma St. vs. Kentucky
Vanderbilt vs. Baylor

Of course as this year went, playing tough teams and taking an early loss wouldn't kill you at all.

I'd have Oklahoma over Florida, Georgia over Texas, and 4 I don't knows.  That would fun to watch, but the only way we ever get anything half as fun as that is if we get a playoff.

FWIW, the Big XII North beat the South in head-to-head matchups this year.  I'm just sayin'. . .

Yet, didn't win the conference title. Plus 3 wins against Baylor can skew the numbers a tad.

So can 3 wins against Iowa State.  I think head-to-head W/L in conference is about the best measure you can get, and the North was better this season.

Kansas didn't have to play Texas or Oklahoma in the regular season (or Texas Tech). That might have skewed things a bit, as well.

Maybe.  But I'm sure you could go through the entire conference and find ways to skew your argument one way or the other.  For example, since Kansas (the 2nd best team in the north) didn't play those 3 teams, that gave automatic wins to the south that Kansas might have otherwise picked up.  You could go all night long with those scenarios.  The fact is, each team played 3 teams from the other division, and the North had the better record.

As for Texas, do you really think Kansas fans were scared of playing Texas this year after Kansas State blew Texas out AT Austin?

Anyway, the point is if you want to make the argument that the South is potentially the best division in the nation, you should probably at least win your season H2H record against the supposedly weak North first.  And they didn't.

I didn't say that they were the best this year. I said that next year they could be the best in the Nation.
