College Football Picks Week 7: Red River Shootout Won't Be Close
Best Weekend Of The College Football Season (So Far, At Least)

I sure hope your Saturday involves watching football... a lot of it. Perhaps you're one of the fortunate to be attending the Red River Shootout, or the "Car Wreck" Bowl in Gainesville. Maybe you'll be in Columbia, Missouri watching a fastbreak basketball game on the football field or headed to your alma mater at the campus near you.

It's a good weekend to attend a game, but it might be ever better if you choose to watch from home or the bar near you. From the 12 ET kickoff of the Red River Shootout at the Cotton Bowl until the final accolade Verne Lundquist spews toward Tim Tebow, we've got some serious college football. I for one, can't wait.

On to the picks...

TONIGHT: Clemson at #21 Wake Forest [62% of FanIQ are picking the Demon Deacons]

Different year, same story for Tommy Bowden. A lot of talent, disappointing losses. After watching Alabama dismantle Georgia, that opening week loss becomes more forgivable, but the Clemson Tigers lost to Maryland most recently after leading 17-6 at halftime and failing to score in the second half. I remain confounded about Bowden's use of James Davis and C.J. Spiller. He needs to make a statement to his team, his offensive line and the Demon Deacons and run the ball until it's absolutely necessary to throw. I like Wake Forest. Jim Grobe is one of the best coaches in the country. But this is your typical Clemson Tigers team in yet another way -- they'll win just enough to keep Bowden in charge. Clemson 24, Wake 20

Saturday: Texas vs Oklahoma [78% Sooners]

Colt McCoy leads the Longhorns in rushing. That's good for him, bad for Texas. UT is a pretty good team, but not in the ballpark with Oklahoma, especially if they're not going to be able to establish the run and keep Sam Bradford cold on the bench. Frankly, I'll be surprised if this is close. Because of the rivalry factor I've kept my prediction to within 14 points, but when the Sooners get going it can be an avalanche effect for opponents. Colt has done a great job of limiting erros because he hasn't been in a position to feel any pressure. That changes in the Cotton Bowl. Sooners 38, Longhorns 24

Notre Dame at North Carolina [69% Tar Heels]

I'm very, very intrigued to see Notre Dame in this game, one that I believe is far more evenly matched than many are giving credit. Jimmy Clausen may have been overrated coming to Notre Dame last year, but he's starting to live up to "top prospect" billing now, as are his wide receiving options. If this is in South Bend I'd be picking the Irish, but things change when the Golden Domers go on the road. Chapel Hill should be jacked up and the relief play of quarterback Cam Sexton has been very impressive. Heels 31, Irish 28

Nebraska at #7 Texas Tech [91% Red Raiders]

Not really sure why I've included this one, but I enjoy predicting Cornhuskers' losses. This one should be brutal with Graham Harrell spitting all over the the not yet-Black Shirts for 500-plus yards. Leach 45, Pelini 21

#22 Michigan State at Northwestern [82% Spartans]

I have to admit I'm stunned at the runaway confidence behind Michigan State in the community. 82%!? Very interesting barometer game for us Big Ten fans. Both are riding five game winning streaks, but a lot of doubt follows the early success. Can the Spartans injured defensive backfield keep up with C.J. Bacher, who led the Wildcats to a 48-41 victory last year in OT? Can Northwestern stop Javon Ringer, who ran for 185 yards last year? One thing we do know about these games is that they'll be entertaining. One shouldn't forget two years ago when Michigan State came back from a 38-3 deficit in the third quarter. I think the Spartans ability to run is the difference. MSU 34, NW 24

#4 LSU at #11 Florida [56% Gators]

Florida still can't run the ball with it's running backs. At least not well, particularly against stout defenses. LSU has found their man in Charles Scott, but they also have numerous other options to him Jarrett Lee operate the offense. I just don't like what I've seen from the Gators this year and believe they'll be physically worn down by the end of this game, even at home. Since it'll be a painful loss, Gator fans, here's something for you on the right. Tigers 34, Gators 17

#17 Oklahoma State at #3 Missouri [97% Tigers]

Woody Hayes would throw one of his classic fits of rage if he was forced to watch this game. While I enjoy a dominated ground attack, you can't ignore the entertainment value of these offenses that are rolling up 50+ points with ease on their opponents. MUST WATCH. Our boy, excuse me, MAN Mike Gundy has the Cowboys headed in the right direction and whether it's this year or not, they'll be competing on New Year's Day very soon. OSU is much improved and Zac Robinson has been lost in the sea of talened Big 12 QB's, but Missouri is simply much, much better, particularly on defense. Tigers 42, Cowboys 28.

UPSET Special: Mississippi State over #13 Vanderbilt

I'm a little dissapointed, CF, that you didn't pick any upsets this week (other than Vandy).  I can't blame you though.  Those are tough games to pick against the faves.

But I'll go against the grain.  I have to pick at least one so I can sleep at night.  The Cowboys are going to take down Chase Daniel and MIssouri this weekend.  (Well, not Daniel.  He will still put up gaudy numbers, but so will Ok St).  Okie State wil catch Missouri looking ahead to the showdown with Texas and will outshoot Daniel and Co. 45-42.

Meh, what's it going to hurt.  I made a complete ass of myself last weekend and picked the Huskers to win.  Might as well make it 2 weeks in-a-row.

Haha, a little disappointed in myself as well.

In my defense, I think the LSU winning 34-17 on the road was rather bold and I'm pretty sure Wake is favored tonight, although I'd hardly call Clemson over WF as an upset.

I sure hope Oklahoma State does pull that off. For whatever reason I emphathize with that program as I interpret OSU to be the Michigan State of the Big 12 or vice versa.

OSU as the Big 12 Michigan St., yeah that is about right.

Middle of the road teams with state in their name, that just can't seem to get out of the shadow of their in state team or team to the south that is a powerhouse.
