We're getting closer. Another step towards our college football season starting has come with the first release of the USA Today, Coaches' Poll Top 25.
You may say this isn't very important, but I beg to differ. It forms our perception of these teams, and beating a team that was ranked highly at the beginning of the year plays a big role in forming the BCS, regardless of how bad the team ends up.
Those ranked highly get a fancy number next to their name in the first few weeks and with that comes more exposure. Of course, that could also be a bad thing, but now with so many games televised you're not exactly going to fly under the radar.
So who's in position early to become a part of the BCS conversation? Georgia Bulldogs.
Talk about riding a wave of positive momentum. Had Georgia played a real BCS caliber team in the Sugar Bowl, instead of the insanely overrated Hawaii Colt Brennans, the Bulldogs wouldn't be sitting at No. 1 in the first coaches rankings.
The most talented team in the country remains out west in Southern California. Joe McKnight is going to be a joy to watch all season. If Ken Griffey's swing is the aesthically pleasing in baseball, then McKnight's running may be college football's equivalent .
Despite getting housed in the BCS title game for a second straight year, the Ohio State Buckeyes are back up top in third. Take this for what it's worth, since I'm a Big Ten guy, but Jim Tressel has a much better team this year than a year ago.
Here's the full coaches' rankings. Briefly, most overrated = Texas Tech at No. 14. Underrated = Pittsburgh (nr)
The even better news is that Monday marks the kickoff of our FanIQ Top 25 previews. You've been voting over the past month and the results our in. Our team of fans will begin with a countdown of the first six teams next week, and we'll conclude with the FanIQ No. 1 on the Aug 29th. We're under a month away from real actual football.
