We're now one-third of the way through the season and the polls are starting to mean a little more. Frankly, this is the week the pollsters should publish their very first ranking. The one thought that jumps out to me most about these week 5 standings is the lack of transparency in the coaches poll. If it's going to be a part of the BCS, then we should see how each coach is voting. For instance, I love my Spartans, but they're not among the 25 best teams. I guarantee you arrogant Charlie has each of the four teams Notre Dame has faced wayyyyy overrated, one of which is Michigan State.
It's also apparent that the coaches don't see a lot of Saturday's action, but always catch the Thursday and Friday games. Oklahoma gained 3 first-place votes with their beatdown of Tulsa on Friday night. Miami (FL) is almost ranked as a result of the win on Thursday over perpetually overrated Texas A&M.
Other thoughts on the rankings:
- Despite USC having the lions share of first place votes, LSU is very, very close to 1st place. The Trojans must be 3rd or even 4th in many ballots.
- Arkansas didn't get a single vote in the coaches poll. Come on. They lost to Kentucky (pretty good), and Alabama (good). Both those teams should be ranked, and Arkansas is still a solid team.
- Michigan received 21 votes in the AP, 17 in Coaches.
- Louisville still got votes in the Coaches.
- Most overrated: Wisconsin at #9 (vs Michigan State this week), Underrated: Missouri at #20.
Your thoughts.
