Right behind the Who's #1 and Heisman year long debates, who's the best conference fodder is always good fun. This time of the year conferences better take care of non-conference games are they can kiss any chance of 2 BCS teams good bye (see: Big Ten)So after two week, who's the best conference? Here's my two cents.
1. SEC
The Good: LSU is really freakin' good. I noticed many of you dropped Virginia Tech way down, or even out of your rankings. My biggest rankings pet peeve, a lower ranked team loses to the top ranked team and they plummet. Aren't they supposed to lose? I digress. LSU is outstanding, beat a still very good Hokie team and it's appropriate the best conference has the nation's best team (for now). Tennessee beat up Southern Miss. South Carolina displayed the conferences' depth with a road win at Georgia and Alabama is back on the rise with Nick Saban.
The Bad: I didn't think much of Auburn before the year started, but that doesn't take away from South Florida's win on the road in the heart of the SEC. A bad loss for the conference that's trying to show off their strength.
Key Game This Week: Kentucky vs #8 Louisville. A chance to reestablish themselves against the Big East. If Mid Tennessee State can roll 42 points on the Cardinals, the Wildcats should break the 50 mark.
2. Pac-10
The Good: Obviously Oregon rolling over Michigan at the Big House is the top story. But how good is Michigan? Either way, it's a clear indication of the Pac-10's strength over the Big Ten. UCLA beat a very good BYU team. Washington beating Boise State shows last year's weakness could be this year's strength. Arizona State's 33 consecutive points against Colorado didn't go unnoticed.
The Bad: Oregon State scoring 3 points at (Big East) Cincinnati. Ouch. We'll let the Bears close call in Fort Collins slide for now.
Key Game This Week: I'm going to have to call out three. Washington has the Ohio State Buckeyes at home. A chance to knockout the Big Ten and make a Big Ten statement for the conference. USC visits Nebraska. I suspect this will be a 14-point win, but a close call will be fodder for Big XII and SEC supporters. I'll also be keeping an eye on Oregon and how well they follow up their win with Fresno State visiting.
3. Big XII
The Good: Emergence of Oklahoma as one of the best teams in the country. Miami (FL) isn't THAT bad. Texas shaking off a good TCU team. Nebraska beat what I still think is a Top 30 Wake Forest team, and Missouri just might be the most underrated/under the radar.
The Bad: Texas A&M? Not sure what they're about yet. Iowa State has lost to Kent State and Northern Iowa. Ouch. Kansas can score, but what about against a defense.
Key Game This Week: Obviously, Nebraska at home vs #1 USC.
4. ACC
The Good: Boston College and Georgia Tech both might be very, very good. That's about it thus far. Wait a weak before dismissing Virginia Tech, LSU is just that good. Tyrod Taylor at QB will help.
The Bad: Miami not remaining competitive with Oklahoma. Virginia Tech not remaining competitive with Oklahoma, and Florida State losing for most of the game versus a UAB team that lost 55-18 to Michigan State.
Key Game This Week: Maryland vs #4 West Virginia.
5. Big East
The Good: Without a doubt the best win by a Big East team in a while, South Florida over Auburn. Cinci's win was a boost, but Oregon State's not all that good.
The Bad: Too many questions with Louisville and West Virginia's D. I'll bump them up if West Virginia and Louisville handle their business this week.
Key Game This Week: Two -- West Virginia at Maryland, Louisville at Kentucky
6. Big Ten
The Good: Hmm. Not much. A lot of mights right now. Penn State might be really good. Purdue might be explosive. Michigan State might be disciplined. Will remain here until a team proves themselves out of conference.
The Bad: Need I really elaborate? Hail to the Kittens!
Key Game This Week: Ohio State at Washington. Must win for the conference.
Your turn.
