College Football Scores: LSU Shuts Out Mississippi State, Louisville Hangs a 73 Spot
READ MORE:

First night of college football is in the books. LSU students take the early lead in the brilliant sign standings. Seriously, how great is that?

LSU 45, Mississippi State 0 If there are any of you saying you thought the Tigers would look better, let me help you. LSU plays Virginia Tech next week. You think they were going to show anything tonight. What's a little scary is that with an extremely vanilla offense and defense, the Bayou Bengals beat Miss State this bad. (Is Mike Kenig the worst QB ever?) A matter of fact, that's really scary. Let's just say this could have looked a whole lot like ...

Louisville 73, Murray State 10 Ok, can the NCAA prohibit D1 teams from playing this type of competition? It's not needed. If they want a preseason scrimmage against the Racers, then by all means invite them to campus for an organized scrimmage. But when it counts, is this really necessary? On the first four drives there wasn't a DB within 15 yards of a Cardinal receiver. What purpose does this serve? There may be a blog post on this later ...

Rutgers 38, Buffalo 3
This was Buffalo, nothing to see here.

Kent State 23, Iowa State 14
Yikes! Good luck with the press conference tomorrow Gene Chizik. Kent State isn't all that bad, just another MAC team beating a BCS foe. It's nothing new, you guys just normally don't notice.

Of little interest to you, but a lot to me, Miami 14, Ball State 13. In what was otherwise an exhibition of bad play calling by Redhawks head coach Shane Montgomery, my beloved alma mater go it right with 17 seconds remaining and handed the ball to Brandon Murphy to a 6-yard plunge. To make a long story short, my dad was stuck in Fort Smith, Arkansas this morning with a canceled flight. Because he's my dad, and driven by a passion for football (right or wrong), he rented a car and drove all the way to Muncie, IN to catch the ending. True story. My dad is nuts.

Anyway, that's just the start of a fun weekend. Feel free to share your Day 1 reactions here.

In defense of the Louisville game... they gave an in-state program a chance to get their team on national tv and to get some more name recognition.  Tonight's game, despite the shellacking, was invaluable to Murray State.  Every team schedules cupcakes early, why the disdain for Louisville?

Well said.  Murray State obviously welcomed the opportunity to get the publicity; they did not have to agree to schedule this game.  They had to know what was in store for them ahead of time.

Was there disdain for Louisville? Don't take it personally. No disdain for Louisville, just for the fact D1 teams are playing lousy competitions. Louisville just happened to be one of them last night. There are many more this weekend.

I understand the whole "help out the little guy" but I thought that's what playing a Buffalo was for. At least they're D1.

Just saying from a fan's perspective D1-D1AA matchups are weak.

I can think of two reasons.

1. When they added the 12th game, last year and this year you have teams trying to fill games throughout the season. Many teams have an out of conference game during their conference schedule. I know many school schedules matchups years in advance so hopefully with each passing year the schools will have adapted to the 12 games and we will see less 1-AA fill in games.

2. I believe the NCAA changed the rules allowing wins over 1-AA teams to count towards bowl eligibility (although just one per season so you can't load up on them).

So maybe if those games didn't count meaning you had to 6-5 outside of a 1-AA game we might get fewer of those matchups too.

You have to love Big Russ! Did Jon Kroeger meet him there for a meeting?

I know that your comment was pointed at Louisville alone, but they took the brunt in this column. And I agree with you for the most part, but, they coluld have selected any number of D1 schools and laid the same beating on them...

If they had played Buffalo they may not have put up 73. Then again I really doubt Buffalo could score 10 on Louisville.

All this Buffalo talk makes me pumped for the big Buffalo/Temple matchup (next week I think).

I expect a big blog post hyping that as game of the week.

Maybe they don't score on every drive vs. Buffalo.  Maybe they only score 52...

LSU is my National Championship pick. I think this years ncaaf is going to be as exciting as last season & we had some games & bowl games that were memorable & will make a major impact on college football history.

As of earlier today playing the 1AA teams isn't such a gimme...
