This week there was only one upset coming out of the Top 10 as South Florida lost a heartbreaker to the unranked Pittsburgh Panthers at home 26-21. However, I have a feeling there will be a couple movers due to game performance (or lack thereof) on Saturday. We'll start at the top.# 1---Oklahoma.
Without a doubt, Oklahoma had the Bears of Baylor down and out before they made it into Waco, Texas. This game was 28-0 by the end of the first quarter! If they hadn't let up they probably would have put up the most points we have seen all year. Next week should be the Sooners first true test as they battle # 5 Texas.
# 2---Missouri.
In the USA Today Top 25 they were one point behind LSU at number three. After their utter dismantling of Nebraska on Nebraska's home field, they take the number two spot in both polls thanks to LSU being idle and Alabama playing like garbage on Saturday.
# 3---LSU.
Being idle, LSU was the only team in the top ten who didn't have to worry about being upset this week. However if they had played well and won, they would probably be the number two team this week. We'll see if their bye week helped them when they step on the field this Saturday in one of the week's best games at Florida.
# 4---Alabama.
After taking the number two spot last week following the "blackeye" they gave to Georgia, Alabama looked like a completely different team this week against an above average Kentucky club at home! Too many penalties, turnovers, and missed opportunities drops the Crimson Tide down two spots this week. If they plan on contending for a National Championship, or even a Conference Championship, they are going to have to play like they did against Clemson, Arkansas, and Georgia, and not like they did Saturday.
# 5---Texas.
Texas dominated Colorado on Saturday in what some expected to be a letdown game in Boulder. They took a 21-0 lead into the half and kept pouring it on in the second half winning 38-14. If they had been any closer to Missouri in the previous poll they probably would have jumped up to number four putting Alabama at number five. However, Alabama did win so they cannot drop too many spots. Next week will be the tell all game as the Longhorns take on # 1 Oklahoma in the annual Red River Shootout.
# 6---Penn State.
Penn State didn't have the greatest game against Purdue this Saturday, but they got the job done away from home. Some may be asking why I didn't drop them like I did Alabama. Here's your answer. They played at their opponent's field and won the game by two touchdowns. Alabama played at home and won by a field goal. Plus, the teams behind them didn't dominate like Missouri did.
# 7---Texas Tech.
A 58-28 drubbing of Kansas State might be a little misleading. Kansas State actually played with the Red Raiders for the first twenty minutes or so, but after Texas Tech put up a 24 spot in the second quarter it was smooth sailing from there.
# 8---USC.
This one-loss team proved it still had a shot at not only the PAC-10 Championship, but the National Championship as well. After a mediocre first quarter in which the Trojans actually trailed at the end of, the sleeping giants finally woke up breaking down the Ducks of Oregon (formerly ranked 23 in the Nation) 44-10. This type of play against a ranked opponent earns USC a bump up to number 8.
# 9---BYU.
Ahhh, the fly in the ointment. BYU prevailed Friday night against a not-so-formidable opponent in Utah State 34-14. BYU actually has a chance to play in a BCS game as long as they can remain unbeaten throughout the rest of the season. Some are saying they could even play for the National Championship, but with the Big Twelve with three teams in the top 7 and the SEC with three teams (soon to be) in the top ten, I just don't see how we won't have a Big Twelve vs. SEC National Championship game this year.
# 10---Georgia.
The Bulldogs had a week off to think about what they did wrong against Alabama last week and where they need to improve the most before their upcoming game next Saturday against Tennessee. With South Florida losing I believe Georgia stays above Florida for now to rejoin the top ten. With Tennessee's quarterback problems, and Georgia looking for blood this week at home, they should stay in the top ten for now.
