Good Week For The NFL To Kickoff, Not Much To See Here
9/4/08
Whether is was by design or not, Week 2 in college football will be very quiet with the NFL Kickoff Weekend looming. No ranked teams are playing each other, and one of the most compelling matchups is an SEC conference game this evening. Steve Spurrier and his expressions always enterain. Tonight: No. 24 South Carolina at Vanderbilt (8:30, ESPN) - 97% picking Gamecocks
I so badly want to pick the Commodores at home because I think QB Chris Nickson and do-everything D.J. Moore are big enough playmakers to do some damage on the Gamecocks. But that South Carolina defense is too good, and now Spurrier has a capable, somewhat experienced quarterback under center. Chris Smelley started last year against Vandy, and even though he lost, he'll move the ball just enough. Don't expect a pretty game. My Pick: South Carolina 16, Vandy 13
Saturday: Miami (OH) at Michigan (12, ESPN) - Pending Pick'Em Addition
I'm selfishly adding this to the key game lineup mostly because I'll be in attendance, but also because I think it'll be interesting to see how Rich Rodriguez and the Wolverines respond. Despite Miami getting waxed by Vanderbilt last week at home, I wouldn't write this off as an easy Michigan win. This may be the alumni in me talking, but the Redhawks are a decent football team and have a trio of linebackers that are much better than Utah's. Miami will contain the run and beg Steven Threat and Nick Sheridan to beat them in the air. The Redhawks defensive backfield isn't exactly fast, so the opportunities should be there. I expect a very close game, and yes, an upset. Miami 28, Michigan 24
Southern Miss at No. 9 Auburn (12:30, ESPN Reg.) - Pending Pick'Em Addition
Don't write this game off quickly as a blowout. So Miss can play. Damion Fletcher ran up 222 yards in week 1 and also established a passing game with one of the nation's top freshman receivers, DeAndre Brown. Now Louisiana-Lafayette isn't exactly Auburn, but I expect the Eagles will fly with War Eagle long enough to make Tommy Tuberville nervous. A few forced passes late should seal a sound victory. Auburn 31, So. Miss 17
Cincinnati at No. 4 Oklahoma (3:30, ABC) - 97% picking Sooners
Bearcats coach has a lot of Bob Stoops in him, particularly the confident swagger and offensive mindset. He's a good coach, but can only do so much with the talent he has around him. What he does have is a very solid defense, particularly in the defensive backfield with two All-Big East corners in Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith. I think they'll give Sam Bradford a fair amount of trouble. What won't happen is the Bearcats offense giving the Sooners D a lot of trouble. Oklahoma 38, Cincinnati 20
San Diego State at Notre Dame (3:30, NBC) - 98% picking Irish
I'm afraid for my Irish fan friends. They're going to paste the Aztecs, who lost to Cal-Poly, and start to think all of their offensive ailments are fixed. Even if they are looking ahead to next weekend aganist Michigan, this shouldn't be too difficult. Notre Dame 45, SDSU 21
No. 8 West Virginia at East Carolina (4:30, ESPN) - 85% picking Mountaineers
Tyrod Taylor's mobility would have prevented an East Carolina upset over Virginia Tech. Unfortunately for the Pirates, West Virginia won't keep Pat White on the pine. I still think this will be close and very interesting. Late touchdown makes it close. West F'n Virginia 28, ECU 27
Miami (FL) at No. 5 Florida (8:00, ABC) - Pending Pick'Em Addition
Randy Shannon is going to turn the U around, but he's not going to pull off this upset. The Hurricanes have a quarterback making his first start in the Swamp, and plenty of other inexperienced players on defense. That's not going to be enough to stop Tim Tebow in his house. Florida 42, Miami 21
Like I said, not a great week of games, but an opportunity to do plenty of scouting before a huge week 3. Be sure to enter your weekly pick'em and share your picks below if you're so inclined.
