Week 3 is upon us, starting with what I think will be a great game tonight at Maryland. Sniff, sniff ... upset. Here's your weekend preview complete with bloggers takes, FanIQ's picks against the spread and my predictions:Notre Dame at Michigan
Blogs: I don't know if the Wolverine secondary is prepared to stop the swing pass, but Brian at MGoBlog has the screen pass and d-bag Clausen look-a-likes covered. The M Zone hasn't given up yet and prepared to circle the wagons. Also stop by Stadium and Main for some straightforward intelligent Michigan commentary (friend of a good friend).
Blue Gray Sky has a fantastic preview. We agree, this is still a huge game. What intrigues me more is the potential onslaught of media criticism is Charlie Weis starts out 0-3 in year 3. You know who didn't do that? Tyrone Willingham. I don't even want to know what happens if the Wolverines start out 0-3.
FanIQ: 67% say Irish (+9.5)
My Take: Like Vegas, I'm still having a hard time buying Michigan is this awful. But considering Notre Dame has played arguably two of the top 5 defenses in the country. No one is going to look good against that. There's a real chance the Irish offense isn't totally anemic. I can't wait to watch this game (honestly); I'm just upset one of them has to win. I'm giving the Wolverines one more chance. Michigan 27, Notre Dame 24.
Southern California at Nebraska
Blogs: Corn Nation tries to get inside the mind of Peter Carroll, while Conquest Chronicles tries to game plan for the Huskers. Expect a much less cordial approach to the game as Saturday approaches. This two fan bases don't like each other. If you listen to Jim Rome regularly, I think you know what I'm saying.
FanIQ: 53% say Trojans (-10.5)
My Take: When given the chance in front of a national audience to show up their stuff, the Trojans always play up to their potential. I don't expect this to be close. USC 35, Nebraska 21.
Tennessee at Florida
Blogs: EDSBS has all your Tennessee Hate Week needs covered, with Phil Fulmer giving birth to a donut picture goodness. Rocky Top Talk dabbles in some rivalry haiku. I'm as stunned as you are.
FanIQ: 63% say Gators (-8.5)
My Take: Not impressed with the Gators defense, less impressed with the Vols. Tim Tebow and his plethora of options on offense should get one more score. Florida 31, Tennessee 23.
Boston College at Georgia Tech
Blogs: Ramblin Racket and Eagle in Atlanta do the roundtable thing. GT Sports Blog is ready to PUMP ... YOU UP!!
FanIQ: 59% say Eagles (+7.5)
My Take: I said it before the season, Georgia Tech will have the top defense in the country. Combine that with Tashard Choice and you've got a winning formula. Matt Ryan, good luck. GT 20, BC 10.
Ohio State at Washington
Blogs: Around the Oval opines on the 5 things the Buckeyes need to do against the Huskies and 5 reasons they may lose. What do you think the chances are that Jake Locker is one of those?
FanIQ: 54% say Buckeyes (-3.5)
My Take: Washington is much better than many predicted, but in two weeks it might be possible that they've become overrated. It's also likely that the Buckeyes defense is still overlooked. I like the Ohio State D to contain Locker just enough. Ohio State 23, Huskies 13.
Arkansas at Alabama
Blogs: Roll Bama Roll and the Hog Blogger discuss the game together. That's cute.
FanIQ: 54% say Razorbacks (+3.5)
My Take: He's a bastard but a hell of a football coach. Arkansas is more talented, by far, but Houston Nutt is going to get outcoached. Alabama 23, Arkansas 21.
Tonights Game: West Virginia at Maryland
FanIQ: 60% say West Virginia (-15.5)
My Take: Home Crowd. Check. Ability to establish the run and keep WVU offense off the field for long stretches and out of rhythm. Check. Solid run defense. Kinda Check. Upset. Check! Maryland 30, West Virginia 28.
Let me hear your picks!
