The Rockies aren't interested in easy endeavors. Once 9-games below .500, Colorado won 14 of their final 15 games to capture the National League Wild Card. Naturally, they had to extend the extended regular season into extra innings, coming back from two runs down in the 13th.
I would not want to play the Rockies right now. Fearless, unflappable, and every other adjective that describes teams that have won more games than they've lost in October.
A tremendous game left me confident in two thoughts:
1. MLB needs to have Instant Replay in some form
Maintaining the traditions of the game... blah, blah, blah... when technology can help you determine whether a ball was a home run or not, why would you opt out? I'm fine with not allowing replay for close plays at 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and even home plate because an umpire is right on the play. But when asking an ump, who's more than likely out of shape, to run down the foul line and make a judgment call from 40-feet away I see a void that can easily be aided by video replay.
Due to the final play of the game, where it seems clear Matt Holliday didn't touch the plate, wouldn't replay be beneficial? Tim Kurkjian made a good point on Baseball Tonight that might have changed my mind on this as it does interpret the flow of the game and celebration. That said, don't you want to get the calls absolutely correct in contests of this magnitude? I'd like to see replay on HR calls as a starting points.
2. Matt Holliday is the NL MVP
Prince Fielder had a tremendous season, but Holliday not only contributed greatly to the Rockies win tonight, but he ignited the 14 wins in 15 games run. Most Valuable Players will their team to victories. He has done so. Case closed.
What an unbelievable finish to the MLB regular season. Wednesday night can't come soon enough.
