Colts waive three players, sign nine Undrafted Free Agents

Over the past few days the Indianapolis Colts favored the lucky number nine, as they signed nine rookies in the NFL draft over the weekend a similar number of undrafted free agents over the last three days. But that seemed to change on Tuesday as the Indianapolis Colts waived three players – running back Alvester Alexander, linebacker Shawn Loiseau and fullback Robert Hughes – ahead of a long-stretch of offseason workout programs.

Of the three players waived by the Indianapolis Colts, second-year pro Robert Hughes back saw the most playing time last season. The Indianapolis Colts initially signed Robert Hughes onto their practice squad last October. But Robert Hughes was promoted to the active and played five games last season, rushing for 5-yards on one attempt and recording a 3-yard reception.

The former undrafted free agent, Robert Hughes, spent 2011 out of football after being released by the Chicago Bears ahead of the regular season. The 23-year-old Robert Hughes remained with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers through training camp and preseason in 2012, and also spent parts of last year on the Washington Redskins’ practice squad.

Meanwhile, Alvester Alexander, spent parts of the 2012 regular season on the Indianapolis Colts’ and Tennessee Titans’ practice squad. However, Alvester Alexander was initially picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears and released in mid-July last year.

Shawn Loiseau also signed onto the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad last season, following his release by the Houston Texans on Sep.1. The Houston Texans had originally signed Shawn Loiseau after he slid from the seventh round and out of the NFL Draft in 2012.

Both first-year players Alvester Alexander and Shawn Loiseau had signed future/reserve contract with the Indianapolis Colts in 2013.

The moves should create roster space for the Indianapolis Colts, who were in dire need of it after signing nine undrafted free agents this April. NFL rules mandate that offseason roster should stand no more than 90 players, including the rookie class and undrafted free agents.

The list of undrafted free agents officially announced by the Indianapolis Colts is as follows:

·         OT Emmett Cleary, Boston College
·         LB C.O. Prime, Wagner
·         RB Dan Moore, Montana
·         RB Denodus O’Bryant, Lindenwood
·         WR Rodrick Rumble, Idaho State
·         WR Lanear Sampson, Baylor
·         CB Daxton Swanson, Sam Houston State
·         CB Sheldon Price, UCLA
·         K Brandon McManus, Temple
