Corey Maggette Gets Mid-Level Exception Offer From Celtics
Why The Celtics Trying For Corey Maggette Actually Makes Sense
One of the weirder things to happen today in NBA free agency news is that the Boston Celtics have expressed a great deal of interest in signing Corey Maggette who just opted out with the Clippers.

Now, at first glance, this is completely ridiculous. Boston already has its 2 through 4 spots filled and they're ridiculously over the salary cap already. Why in God's name would they be going after Maggette?

Well, because it actually makes perfect sense. Tom Ziller of Fanhouse points out what a brilliant move this is by the Celtics. It's based on the assumption that Elton Brand returns to the Clippers (which seems guaranteed now) which in turn causes a domino effect that leaves Maggette ripe for the taking.
If the Clippers renew their commitment to Elton Brand, as expected, Corey Maggette's gone. He'd have to be renounced by the Clippers in order to squeeze in Baron Davis' $13 million. That means L.A. can't sign-and-trade Maggette, which would have been the easiest way for the guy to get a contract in the $7-10 million per year range. Assuming all that happens (Maggs is renounced, Brand resigns for $13 million or so), Maggette's options above the mid-level shrink profusely. There's Philadelphia (if they strike out on Josh Smith), Memphis (unlikely), and maybe Golden State.

So if it becomes a mid-level fiesta, Boston's brilliant for getting into the sweepstakes early. They can offer Maggs the same contract almost every other team can ... and they can also offer the best shot at a ring (though the Lakers might quibble).

So if the Philly door closes for Maggette, and he doesn't want to play for Memphis or Golden State, he immediately falls into the mid-level exception range.

Only teams that are over the salary cap, like Boston, can use the mid-level exception to sign one free agents. Last year's mid-level exception was $5.36 million.

The Spurs have also offered Maggette the mid-level exception, but while Maggette would likely start there, in my mind he'd be much less closer to getting a ring. The Spurs appear to be slowly on their way down as they continue to get older. And when you combine that with the fact that they're in the brutal Western Conference, it suddenly gets less enticing.

Ultimately, the real question here is what does Maggette want? Money or the chance for a ring? If he wants money, Memphis and Golden State are probably his best options. But if he wants a ring, then coming off the bench for Boston makes perfect sense.

It does make a lot of sense especially since Pierce, Allen and Garnett have a lot of miles on them and adding a player like Maggette would less the load. I have a feeling he is going to take the dough and end up in either Philly or G.S. but then I am not a smart man so take my words for what they worth.

I think you vastly overrate the decline of the Spurs.  They still have the three best superstars this side of Boston, and can offer much more playing time and a starting role.  Not saying they'll get him, but I don't think Maggette has a demonstrably inferior shot at a title by signing with the Spurs vs. with the Celts.

I do for one simple reason. The Spurs play in the Western conference. That means they have to face teams like the Lakers and the Hornets again next year in the playoffs. Who does Boston have to worry about? Pistons and Cavs, neither of which are anywhere near the level of the Lakers or Hornets.

The east is simply an easier path.

True point, but I don't players simply want "easy".  I think he wants the best situation for him.  In terms of minutes, role and the fact that the team needs him to win...I see San Antonio as a better overall situation.  You could argue that they were a Ginobili injury away from playing Boston in the Finals.

The East is an easier path to the Finals, but not a title. The Lakers pulled a "Spurs" and blew it. It was their title to win, and they blew it. The Spurs blew their opportunities to go to the Finals. They were literally a Manu Ginobili ankle injury and a few no-calls from the NBA Finals. They blew it. Corey would easily replace Finley for starting role, and would power our inside even stronger. The Celtics are just pushing their salary cap over the limit, and will be paying some serious taxes if they keep signing big contracts. You reap what you sew. That's why the Spurs haven't been trying to pump their team with more All-Stars despite aging. Maggette would probably favor the Spurs if thats the case. Spurs can offer nearly the same amount, and he'd have 2x more playing time, a stronger role, and nearly as strong of a chance to win the title as the Celtics. Ginobili+Duncan+Bowen+Parker+Maggette is one scary starting line-up. With that line-up i'd expect Spurs to hold opponents under 88 a game.

take away the injury and the two no-calls from games 1 and 4 in the waning seconds, the Spurs would not have blown leads and stupid turnovers. Add Maggette to the mix and you have not a strong trio, but a near indestructable starting line-up... if one is down or two having bad games, with all that talent up front, if they add more depth-- hopefully our draft picks evolve to that-- then you easily have a 60+ win team and strong title contender. It's also easier to climb the mountain than repeat. Spurs have yet to accomplish that. Maybe bench depth, good rookies and Maggette can end that. I'd love to see Duncan tie Jordan with 6 rings.
