Blog Photo - Cory Schneider traded to DevilsFor two years now, there's been a feeling of when, not if, the Vancouver Canucks would trade goalie Roberto Luongo.Today on NHL Draft Day, the Canucks finally traded a goalie. What no one saw coming though was that it would be their other goalie, Cory Schneider, that would get traded. Also a shock was who Schneider was traded to, the New Jersey Devils, for the 9th overall pick in the draft. Vancouver used that pick on Bo Horvath, a center from the Ontario Hockey League.

Out of nowhere, the Devils have a long term replacement for Martin Brodeur. Schneider is 27 and has 2 years left on his contract. Brodeur is 41 and has one year left on his deal. It's unknown what New Jersey will do with the two of them next season, but clearly the plan is for Schneider to become the full-time starter in 2014-15.

As for the Canucks, their soap opera continues with Luongo still around. It'll be up to him to get Vancouver back in the hunt in the Western Conference next year.

Other news from today's Draft:

The Avalanche selected 17 year old center Nathan McKinnon with the first overall pick. McKinnon played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season. The most known prospect, Seth Jones (son of Popeye), went 4th overall to the Predators.

Just a few days after going the Stanley Cup winning goal, Dave Bolland was traded from the Blackhawks to the Maple Leafs for three draft picks (No. 51 and 117 this year, and a 4th rounder in 2014). Later in the night, Chicago resigned Bryan Bickell to a 4 year extension.
