One of the great things about sports is that you can ask totally ridiculous questions and no one will make fun of you. And here's a perfect example of a ridiculous question: Could the championship Celtics squad beat the USA squad that's going to Beijing?Who cares? It would never happen.
But because the question was asked, someone of course had to answer it.
WhatIfSports, which specializes in answering the drunken questions posed by sports fans, used 1000 separate simulations to break down who would win the theoretical battle.
The answer is not shocking in the least. Or maybe it is, what do I know?
Anyway, Team USA would win 85% of the time, with an average 14 point margin of victory according to WhatIfSports. Game summaries also revealed that LeBron James (40%) and Kobe Bryant (35%) were the most frequent recipients of Player of the Game honors. Although Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, and surprisingly Rajon Rondo were also being mentioned many times.
Rajon Rondo?
This pretty much proves one thing. If you run enough simulations, eventually even I could probably be Player of the Game.
If you care for box scores of games that never happened, WhatIfSports has those as well. Personally, I'm more interested in continuing to pose ridiculously hilarious questions, like who would win a boxing match between Barbaro and Mike Tyson?
I have a feeling if you ran the simulations enough times, Barbaro would eventually gnaw Tyson's ear off. Which would be awesome.
