As you may know, Cris Carter has replaced Sean Salisbury on ESPN, but yesterday at the Draft, you really wouldn't have noticed any difference. Carter did what we always suspected most experts do - they just make stuff up as they go along. This is particularly true at the NFL Draft, where most people could care less about any of the players picked after Round 3.
Luckily, Mel Kiper Jr., who spends all year working on this stuff, took Carter to school for trashing Lavelle Hawkins. And here's the thing, I think Kiper was right. The only reason I say that is because I'm from the Bay Area and watched Cal play nearly every game last year. Hawkins at one point in the season was better than DeSean Jackson. He's not anywhere near as terrible as Carter said he was.
So would I say Carter never even watched game tape of Hawkins? No, I wouldn't say that. But it'd be a safe bet to say the first tape Carter watched of Hawkins was the one that was playing during his NFL Draft analysis.
I don't think Hawkins is all that great. Defenses spent so much time planning for DeSean Jackson, that Hawkins had single coverage all years. His "stats" looked better last season.
Good WR, nothing special. Fortunately for him, the Titans don't have any wide receivers.
