Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent labels Blatter’s comments “sad” and “unacceptable”
Jorge Mendes, the agent of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, leapt to defend the coveted Portuguese forward following comments from FIFA president Sepp Blatter. Mendes has labeled the comments offensive and believes they were made in an attempt to “publicly humiliate” Ronaldo.
Ronaldo and Real Madrid expressed their anger at Blatter’s impersonation and comments on Ronaldo on Tuesday. Blatter, who mimicked Ronaldo on the field and made fun of him spending a lot of money on hair products, has been under heavy fire from football fans across the globe.
Blatter has issued an apology, but his actions have brought little consolation to the hurt and angry Real Madrid team and their fans. In an interview to Marca, Mendes called Blatter’s comments “sad” and “unacceptable”.
“This sad episode involving Mr. Blatter shows an unacceptable lack of respect for the exemplary professionalism and dedication that Cristiano Ronaldo has demonstrated throughout his career,” Mendes said. “As well as an unprecedented disregard for the millions of Ronaldo and Spanish football fans around the world.”
Mendes is considered to be one of the biggest football agents in the world. His list of client includes Jose Mourinho and Radamel Falcao. Mendes believes FIFA has destroyed its image because of Blatter’s comments. The “super-agent” believes FIFA should support players instead of embarrassing them.
“This incident is unworthy of the highest representative of an institution such as FIFA,” Mendes said. “They should value the stars that bring so much passion to this sport, instead of trying to publicly humiliate them.”
Critics believe Blatter has setup Lionel Messi for another Ballon d’Or award. The Barcelona star has picked up the last four Ballon d’Or awards. Ronaldo has been runners up for the prestigious award a number of times, but has only one on his mantle.
Former Portugal and Atletico Madrid forward Paulo Futre believes that Blatter shouldn’t have picked Messi as his favorite player. Futre believes Blatter’s statement could play an unfair role in awarding Messi with another Ballon d’Or award.
“These comments explain the reasons why Cristiano does not have more Ballons d'Or,” Futre told Marca. “This trophy is a farce. If I had doubts, they have been cleared up completely.”
Futre claims Blatter’s comments have left him concerned and anxious over Ronaldo’s impact in Portugal’s World Cup playoff against Sweden.
“I am concerned -- Portugal's place at the World Cup is on the line,” Futre said. “I am afraid this could leave us out -- considering the hate which Blatter has for Cristiano. Blatter has shown he has hate, but Cristiano will speak on the pitch. There has been a lack of respect for the best player in the world.”
