Dale Earnhardt Jr is either loved or hated - but why?
He's the Most Popular Driver.... and the most hated

It's been stated many times. Dale Earnhardt Jr is the most popular driver.  He also makes a lot of money in endorsements and commercials.  He's a team owner, and his driver for 2009, Brad Keselowski, is having an incredible season.  He's also sitting in the mid-twenties in the points standings (22 to 24 the past few weeks).

He is also, it seems, one of the most hated drivers in NASCAR.  But why?

I've read a lot of passionate comments here and on other sites, some claiming he is the best driver ever (he isn't) and others saying he can't drive worth a sh*t (also not true).

Some acknowledge that he is their favorite driver only because Dale Sr was, while others are too young to have known much about Dale Sr and are fans of Dale Jr as new NASCAR fans.

One thing is for certain, he can go anywhere and do almost anything he wants.  Face it, if Dale Jr walked into your local neighborhood restaurant, the owners would fall all over themselves to give him dinner.  If he walked into your local pub, the bartender would be quick to offer him a cold Bud, on the house.

The one thing he can't seem to do, and hasn't been able to do for a while, is win a race.

One other thing he can't do, is comment on anything.  No matter what he says, someone is posting an opinion on what he really means.  If he expresses frustration with his season and takes the blame, it's written up as "Dale Jr second guessing his own abilities to drive".  If he says he and Crew Chief, Lance McGrew are working on communication and making sure they understand what the other is saying for car changes, it's interpreted as "Dale Earnhardt Jr whining about Lance's car set-ups".   Most recently, he commented that the most success he had as a driver so far was with "Pops" Eury on the pit box, someone writes "Dale Earnhardt Jr needs a Dictator".

And that's just the reporters.  Then you have the fans who think they can solve his every problem.  Just go to any blog written about Jr's winless situation and there will be a dozen comments from fans who think they know exactly what he needs to do, and another dozen from those who think he needs to just retire and go away somewhere.

So what is it about Dale Jr that encourages this behavior?

Oddly, I don't see these kind of articles about Jeff Gordon, or Carl Edwards or Tony Stewart.  No one is dramatizing the fact that Jeff hasn't had the success he once had, and no one is claiming to have all the answers.  Kevin Harvick hasn't had a wonderful season and Richard Childress is making adjustments everywhere to try to bring back the success to all his teams.  Are the blogs full of dramatizations? No...... well except for a couple yours truly wrote, there isn't much said at all.  And I don't see people hating Kevin and Jeff Burton and Carl Edwards because they still have all their commercials running, and they are still making lots of money, but they aren't having the success.

Ford as a whole hasn't had the kind of year we thought they would, with Matt Kenseth winning the first two races of the year.  Do we hate Matt because he didn't make the Chase? Well, no.  Do we have all the answers on what he needs to do to succeed? No to that as well.

And the interesting thing is, if you ask Dale Jr if he could trade a Most Popular Driver trophy for a win at a race track, my bet is he would trade you in a second.  In fact, ithink he's honestly getting to the point, with all the criicism, all the naysaying, all the doubts, that he would do almost anything to get that win.  He has been trying.  He was making huge moves forward, racing at the front of the pack.  Then he had problems in the pits, and car failures, but again, somehow, these problems are of his own making, in the minds of the experts and the haters.  He should have been able to recover from the tire changer missing a lug nut.  He should have been able to recover from being caught in the pits when the caution flew.  After all, he's super human isn't he?

No, he's not.

Dale Jr is a NASCAR driver.  He is trying to drive a car to the best of his ability and give his crew chief the information he needs to make adjustments to the car so it will drive better for him on the track.  He isn't an engineer and he doesn't have the handle on what to do with the COT.   Until he knows what he needs in the car, he can't communicate it properly.

I heard an "expert" on SIRIUS say the other day that Dale Jr needs to go to Nepal and meditate.

I certainly don't know what the answer is.  I'm a fan, but I'm not an expert, either in the car, or in what it is like to have Dale Jr's life.

I do know that he does't deserve anyone's hatred.  if you think he's an overrated driver, fine, I understand that, but don't hate him....just because he's Dale Earnhardt  Jr.

I don't think people hate Jooonyer, they hate his obnoxious fans who claim he's one of the best drivers in Nascar.

OK, not because I am a Dale Jr fan, and Not because I am a JrCanuck  fan, but this quite possibly is one of the best articles I have read, regarding the Dale Jr saga!

Thanks girl, for spelling it out the right way!

I've been writing it in my head for about a week now.  Just ask Pat, I made him promise not to post any Dale Jr posts at least a week ago

I want to say that is one of the best articles I've read on Jr. When I'm on FB and peeps go off on Jr I go off on them. I'm a big Jr fan and not just because of his dad. I was a fan of his before his dad died. He's in a slump right now just like some other drivers so I don't know what the big deal is. Jr is a very good driver and when the time is right he'll start winning again.

I just love him...I wish he would win and run up front but if he doesn't that is ok too.....

I'm probably someone on here who is considered to "hate" Dale Jr.  I don't really hate Dale Jr.  He seems like a pretty cool laid back dude.  I think he'd be one of, if not the most interesting person in NASCAR to hang out with.  The issue I have is with a very sizable portion of his fanbase that is just flat out ignorant.  There is always a special excuse for why Dale Jr ran 20th all day and finished there as well. According to them, the fact that Jr recently has routinely finished out of the top 10 in points is nothing more than a fluke or bad luck.  To them, Dale Jr is still a driver who could possibly win a title (yes, theoretically he could but history and his recent "success" makes that a pretty ridiculous argument).  That's what I can't stand.

I can't explain why the 3 other Hendrick cars are battling for the Cup and Little E isn't even in the Chase. When he moved to the 88 ride, I at least expected him to dominate at the super speedways. But win or lose, he's always going to get the popularity votes because 1)the ladies like him, 2)his dad is a legend and 3)he's way cooler than any of the contenders.

THe quote was "they hate his obnoxious fans" which means all of us to me. It is a generalization. A better way of putting it might have been, "they hate the portion of his fan base that insist he does no wrong".

Does that explain it for ya?

What a truly well written passionate look into Jr. While I am a Kyle Busch fan and know that he is a hated driver by most and for good reason at times. I do love to see the passionate love for Dale Jr. I think any fan that has a passion for his or her driver should be respected. Fun to rib each other, but all in all what would sports be w/o that! Go Dale and gl!  Thanks for sharing!

I know you aren't an obnoxious fan at all. But we all know some people that do fall into that category. Fans of Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards,Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson etc don't seem to have this problem, only Joonyer. I'm sick of talking about it too. Why doesn't the media just treat him like he's the 22nd place driver in points? Just like the article says....we're not talking about Kevin Harvick or Matt Kenseth failing to live up to expectations.

This article was well put and put into words the dumbest person can understand. Maybe those are the haters? The ones who just don't know the complications behind the whole driving nascar experience. Most of us don't have the experience but we have the understanding of who he is, Non-errogant, Non-big headed, has self-esteem, he believes in himself and his struggles with DEI and losing 8 and the bullsh*t with that non-human of a step-mom (no-longer or maybe never has been respected that way buy Dale)? But now he is trying to move on and yes there has been struggles along the way, but he will find his grove and his crew will find there grove but alot of races have been fishy to me??????? What is up with all the unexplainable wrecks or OOOPS! I am sorry Dale, didn't meen to bump your front or ass end. To many questions and to many things that are to explainable but yet, it's all Dale's fault. I love you Dale...You keep doing what your doing.

I've said it before and will always stand by it... I like Jr (not in a fan way) and some of his fans are great people, but that certain group of the Jr Nation is the blemish to the sport.  I see them as the reason all this comes around time and time again whether someone does it out of defense because those fans have an issue with their favorite driver or someone just wants to watch the show it brings.  Until those fans get control of themselves and act in a respectful manner this will always continue no matter how good or how bad Jr does.

godspeed and christinej i agree with both of you. especially about the unexplainable wrecks near the end of the race when he's running well. sound like peewee busch doesn't want competition. jr's in 22nd in points and busch is in 12th or 13th where's the competition? neither is in the chase. if it has to do with standings for next year busch best watch himself or he'll have a HUGE target on his back more so then now. Jr will pull out of his slump it has nothing to do with crew chiefs, or engines, or faulty parts. it's jealousy. busch doesn't have the fan following dale jr does, he deosn't have the endoresments jr has, and he doesn't have the sponsor jr has. he's sponsored by anheiser-busch that used to sponsor jr. now if someone is going to get down on the National Guard, Army, Navy, Marines then they're the beer drinkers and not very patriotic. Even when I drank I was still partiotic and stood behind our troops. My father was in the Army, my stepdad and brother (step) were in the Navy. My Stepbrother graduated 99th in his class getting his diploma from President Carter. I could go on and on but I'll stop here.
Where the heck did Kyle come into this?  Even the comments you refer to don't mention him and as far as I've seen it's been lots of other drivers that have been involved in the odd wrecks with Jr this year, not Kyle.  Unless you want to count the one at the beginning of the year in which it was Jr and Vickers getting together that brought Kyle into it.  Oh and Kasey Khane has Jr's old sponsor, not Kyle.  It's this kind of stuff from certain types of Jr fans that bring about the constant hating on Jr.  As I said before, until those fans get control of themselves and act in a respectful manner this will always continue no matter how good or how bad Jr does.

Ah geez...Deb...fantastic article!! One of the best I've read in a long time, but any article that you write is always good. Great job!  I'm not playing favorites because I am a double Junior fan....Junior and Jr Canuk Fan, just simply stating my opinion. I wish I had an answer for all the haters and bashers but I don't. I just think that if everyone would leave Junior alone, alot of the pressure on him would be relieved and he would do a lot better. The poor guy can't make a move without someone making a huge ordeal out of it.

Sorry for the caps I forgot Ihad them on. I like Kyle Busch just not this year that much. I'm not going to debate why. This is about Jr and no one else. I am sorry for the rampage on Kyle. Like I said earlier I've been a Jr fan long before Sr died. He finished 29th today. It wasn't his day to be in the top 20. As I said in my one post when the time is right he will start winning again then look out because he then might be a force to be reckoned with like his daddy at times. So I hope no hard feelings Lori. I can also blame some of my irrationality on my health, however I'm not going to play the health issue or the I did or didn't take my meds issue. Half the time I have to ask the wife if I took my meds or she asks me if I took them. Sad world I live in at the age of 52 and I don't want tea and sympathy. Tea and scones or bisquits will suffice with jam! LMAO

I know exactly the type of Junior fans you're referring to, i.e. the idiots who used to throw beer cans.  Those people make me sick.  If I'm ever at a race where I see those numbskulls throwing beer cans or anything else at a car on the track, I promise you I'm aiming a beer can right at the nearest fan I see throwing crap on the track.  You're absolutely right, there is a certain group that gives a bad rep to ALL Junior fans.

Wow...I leave and watch the race and when I come back there's a battle going on... I remember a previous discussion about Junior fans and then we were all rednecks.  Well, I'm proud to be considered a redneck...I've worked all my life and was a blue collar worker, I believe in God but I'm not in any way an obnoxious fan and there are friends of mine answering here who are far from obnoxious. not all Junior fans are obnoxious and not everyone puts his fans in a certain "group". This being said not all fans who do not root for him are "haters" or "bashers"......

when people paint with a wide brush they seldom hit the mark, i am not a Junior fan but i dont hate him or bash him, to me he is another driver who isn't living up to his potential.....that is all

LMAO
There's no hard feelings.  You can ask people who know me that I don't take things too personal and am usually easy going about everything... unless it involves my kids. lol   We all have our moments and I honestly just really wondered why the heck Kyle had come into it, so I wasn't offended at all and their was no reason for you to apologize, but apology accepted.  If I came across like I was offended or upset to you, I'm sorry and no hard feelings to you too.

I know it's pretty much calmed down in here but I'm going to post a little reminder anyway folks - no personal attacks. No name calling, and no telling people their posts are stupid. Let's play nice :)

I have stated before that I dont like or dis-like Jr, and will say it again - For The Record - BUT - I hate to be somewhere watching the race with friends and all the Jr fans leave after he gets a lap down or something and say, I'm going home, this race is over - What? The race is not over until the checkered flag waves. I am a Carl Edwards fan but have several other drivers that I like. But the best part of NASCAR is really good racing, dies not matter to me who it is. Kramer said it about throwing garbage on the track - twice I have been to Talladega and twice they threw crap on the track - it is embarrassing!
