Dan Uggla is having a ridiculous season. The Marlins second baseman had 27 and 31 home runs in his first two seasons and could honestly pass those totals by the All-Star break.
A home run contest between 2nd baseman? What is this? Ryne Sandberg wants in on this.
Last night with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Uggla sent his 19th bomb deep into the South Florida sky. The second such walk-off grand slam of the week.
The pitcher Detroit gave up for Dontrelle Willis, Andrew Miller, pitched seven strong innings and continues to portend stardom. Florida is now 2 games back of the Phighting Phils.
Awesome Alfonso Soriano took a high inside pitch, fracturing his fourth metacarpal (the bone beneath your left ring finger for you those of you not down with the 206 bones in our hands) and slightly fracturing the spirits of Cubdom. The good news is that Chicago performed just fine without Soriano earlier this season but that was when Alfonso was contributing nothing whatsoever. Since his return, he's regained his leg speed and launched 15 home runs. The Fonz will be out 6 weeks. Oh joy. Cubs 7, Bravos 2
Injury? What Injury? The rival Cardinals lost their stud Albert Pujols Tuesday night for several weeks with a strained calf, but you'd hardly know. 10 more runs against the Reds (not terribly difficult), with Rick Ankiel and Ryan "All-Star" Ludwick hitting two more home runs. Seriously, is there a more overlooked player right now than Ludwick? Dude should be starting for the NL next month in the All-Star Game. Cards 10, Reds 0
Justin Verlander Remembers He Can Pitch A complete game was thrown Wednesday night and for a change the Tigers were on the dealing side of things. Verlander, still 3-9, allowed just four hits and gave Detroit it's second straight win against the first place Sox. There's life! Sort of. Tigers 5, Sox 1
