In case you missed it last night because you were drunk on hot dogs and love for your country (and possibly lots and lots of beer), Dara Torres of the US Swimming Team qualified for her fifth Olympic Games in the 100 meter freestyle. Even more impressive, she won the event, besting US record holder Natalie Coughlin in the process.
Torres was timed in 53.78 seconds, which was 0.02 off her best time ever.
Torres' first Olympic Games was at Los Angeles in 1984, which is absurd. Considering most athletes are one and done in the Olympics, the fact that this is her fifth trip to the Games is incredible. Especially in a sport like swimming, where every Games there's a new batch of elite swimmers to compete against. Oh, and she has a two year old kid to boot. Translation: You're lazy.
Anyway, Torres, who has 9 Olympic medals already (4 golds, 1 so-so silver, 4 shameful bronzes), will try and grab her 10th in Beijing.
As for Phelps, what's there to say? The dude is lightning in a bottle, or water. Although I'm not sure how fast lightning passes through water. Probably not as fast as he does.
He bested his own 200 individual medley world record (which you can see here), and if I were a betting man, I'd say he'll win 103 gold medals at this year's Olympics. He'll hop out of the water in mid-race, run over to the Olympic Stadium, throw a javelin, race back to the pool, and still set the world record - for both the swimming event and the javelin. I'm looking forward to it.
