Darren Sproles Can Be An Every Down Back
Darren Sproles Has Shown Critics He Can Be An Every Down Back

When I heard that Chargers' running back LaDainian Tomlinson was injured and wasn't sure how effective he would be or how long he would play for, I knew that the Colts were going to be in trouble with Darren Sproles likely to get a heavy workload.

Before the season began, I wrote an article about Sproles being the most underrated running back in the NFL, and he showed against the Colts on Saturday night why he truly is.

Hes has always been doubted because of his size and some people just can't face the reality that a 5-6 running back really could make it in the NFL as an every down back.

After Sproles' great performance in the Chargers 24-17 victory on Saturday night where he had five receptions for 45 yards, 24 carries for 105 yards, and two touchdowns, he showed that he isn't too small to handle the NFL grind and workload.

The diminutive back showed that he isn't just a change of pace or situational back that critics immediately point him out to be because of his small frame.

He proved that as an every down back he can be just as effective at the end of the game as he is in the beginning as he scored the game winning 22-yard touchdown in overtime.

Sproles is a one of kind running back whose combined elusive quickness and deceiving power are unmatched by any other back in the NFL. He will be a free agent after this season and will probably be the most coveted running back on the market.

There are many teams that could use Sproles considering he would not only make a teams' running game more dangerous but their passing game as well.

With LT getting older and seemingly losing his step, the Chargers would be smart to try and resign Sproles. However, before the game reports said that the Chargers still only view him as a kick returner and situational back.

This season while LT's age has become a concern and he hasn't been as effective as he has been in past years, Sproles has showed flashes of greatness on the rare opportunities he gets the ball.

However, Coach Norv Turner has been stubborn this entire season refusing to consider giving Sproles a share of the workload.

Although LT was playing with a toe injury early in the season, he was still given 292 carries this season compared to Sproles' 61. The Chargers seem to be set on living in the past and giving their aging running back the majority of the carries.

I understand that what LT has done for the Chargers' franchise is invaluable, but there comes a point when a team needs to not keep a player as their main workhorse just because of what he meant to their organization.

The Chargers already let former back-up Michael Turner go and regretted it; they can't afford to let Sproles go as well.

If the Chargers haven't learned anything from this past playoff game and don't promise him a bigger role in the offense, they will be making a big mistake.

I wrote before the season, "If one day Sproles becomes a starter somewhere, I believe he will show everyone how great he truly is and become an NFL superstar", and I stand by it now more than ever.

Even though this game was incredible, I'd like to see Sproles in a few more games as the No. 1 back before I'd say he's totally worthy of being a No. 1. But San Diego knows more than I do, and frankly, they'd be stupid not to resign him.

Great article and great foresight!  Let's hope the Chargers are smart enough to hold onto him!

Sproles is fun to watch.  They have to resign him now with Tomlinson getting old and beat up.

Durability is the main issue, and Sproles obviously hasn't been used very hard thus far. Maybe he can the display the old magic of Barry Sanders and be too elusive to get hit very hard--or maybe not. We'll see. One thing he will never do is make a living running between the tackles.

Good point. I'm sure the Chargers would have liked to see Turner burning up their opponents again.

Although I'm not sure it's an issue of whether or not the Chargers are intelligent enough. It might just not be financially feasible.

The real issue is what gocows37 mentioned a few comments ago. If the Chargers were REALLY smart, they would have used Sproles a bit more in the regular season to keep LT healthy.

It's working out OK for them so far, though.

Well Sproles made himself a couple bucks Saturday with that performance as he prepares to become a free agent.  However I will respectfully reserve judgment on him being an every down back. I think the way he is used in the passing game and special teams means more than him becoming an every down back. I base this on a couple of factors. First although he and a Maurice Drew-Jones are both guys who may have problems riding a roller coaster, which is an advantage as defenders have a tough time picking up small backs coming through the line. But both have different running styles. Sproles is shiftier than Jones-Drew, he can get to that edge, but not as powerful. I just don't see him being able to get those tough 3rd and 4th and shorts that a back like Drew can get, especially as the season moves on. Using him in his current role provides the Chargers a weapon in the kicking game. His ability to tilt the field in the Chargers favor I think is greater than what he could produce as an every down back.  Sproles is a poor man's version, but more dependable version of Reggie Bush.

Again I could be very wrong about this.

I agree with pat and gocows37, the Chargers should have used Sproles more in the regular season, maybe when L.T. was sore with the toe and stuff. What I think part of what makes Sproles good is the fact that at 5'6" he hides well behind gigantic o-linemen and makes his cut, once past the first line of defense, he has more room to cut and juke but I would agree with 100% injuryrate a few post back that "Even though this game was incredible, I'd like to see Sproles in a few more games as the No. 1 back before I'd say he's totally worthy of being a No. 1." Good point dude!!!

Great article.     To think, I bet on the Colts because LT was hurting.....while in hindsight LT being hurt should've caused me to bet FOR them !!!

Let's see what Sproles does for longer than 1 playoff game before he's anointed the next Barry Sanders.

There have been a few small RB's over the past few years, but only Sanders has been an "every down" back.  While I do like Sproles skills and what he can do with the ball in his hands, the fact of the matter is that he's outweighed by most NFL Safety's and someone that small will get hurt after taking that type of beating.  Brian Westbrook, who I think is one of the best in the NFL, misses games every year because he gets the crap knocked out of him on a weekly basis.  Right now there are very few RB's in the NFL that can handle their team's full work load and Sproles is no different.

We should be talking about that starting O-Line for the Chargers: Kris Dielman (310), Nick Hardwick (295), Mike Goff (311), Marcus McNeil (336), and Jeromey Clarey (306)...and the reserves too, LJ Shelton (345) and Scott Mruczkowski (318). Dielman and McNeil are 2X Pro-Bowlers, Nick Hardwick appeared in the 2006 Pro Bowl.  The "Tank", The Burner, or LT??? I wish we had them all at the same time, but the SD O-Line has been fantastic over the last 5 games! Opening up huuuuge holes and protecting the #1 Rated passer in the NFL! Even Michael Bennett found some yardage out there...LT should be playing decoy routes though!

Ari, read this comment. If you think Sproles is going to go to some place like KC, or Seattle, or Detroit or Buffalo, or Houston or Washington where they have iffy O-lines and succeed, you my friend are in for a huge surprise. I take nothing away from Sproles effort and heart but there probably isn't a better offensive line than what they have in San Diego.

Is that why Sproles has better than stats when he has played than LT one of the best running backs ever.  Acoording to your theory LT must only be good because of his offensive line as well. Any running back is going to have trouble with an iffy offensive line just look at Edgerrin James. I have always said the running back position is the most replaceable. However there are those few backs that are irrepalceable.  What seperates Sproles from other backs is his incredible quickness and deceiving power, his open field ability, his ability to take it the distance, and his ability to help in the passing game. The great Barry Sanders wasn't a power runner but when he got through that hole like Sproles often does, he could take it the distance.

For some reason people just don't respect little men. Leon Washington doesn't get enough respect and now Sproles doesn't either.

By the way Sproles is extremley stong. At the NFL combine he outbenched linebacker Shawn Merriman.

Sproles has always been doubted and since high school he has proven people wrong. I hope people like you keep doubting him, so he continues to be motivated to prove everyone wrong.

I've watched Warrick Dunn play since he was a freshman at Florida State. He might be 3 inches taller and a dub heavier than Sproles. Same guy. I said he had heart just like Dunn does. But an inarguable fact is he will never run up the middle with great success without wide holes created by his OL. A 275 lb lineman puts out a arm tackle and Sproles will either go down, or lose direction, speed and momentum. Those are just facts of physics. /////////As for LT, yes certainly I believe some of his success can be attributed to that SD OL. They don't sit on their laurels. Roman Oben was a fine LT when the Chargers acquired Marcus McNeil in the first round of '06 draft to replace him. Jeromey Clarey replaced Shane Olivea at RT during the '06 season because he had passed him merit wise. You know about how good Hardwick and Dielman are. Mike Goff is the veteran RG that will probably be replaced soon as well.

Of course  I believe some of LtTs  success can also be attributed to that SD OL. My point is that you can't just say well because Sproles is playing behind that line he wouldn' t be able to do it in Buffalo because than you also should say that LT wouldn't do well in Buffalo. Your looking at his height and not looking as his strength. I have seen Sproles run over defenders many times. Is he going to do that as much as Brandon Jacobs and other heavier backs?..of course not. Will he probably get stuffed at the line more than heavier backs? Yes. But he is going to break out for longer runs.. I'll take some short runs for sproles on my team knowing that he is going to break for some big runs.  Not to mention I've seen sproles looks like he was going to be caught in the backfield but he uses his indrecidble quickness to make something out of nothing while heavier backs couldn't.  By the way it's not as if this just happens to smaller guys like Barry Sanders and Sproles. How often does Adrian Peterson get stuffed over and over again until he breaks one big long one. Also Sproles is actually a better goal line back than you think as I've seen him score multiple 1 yard touchdowns in the NFL His size is also sometimes an advantage as he sneaks throughtthe small holes in the line.
