Sproles out indefinitely after surgery on fractured hand
The former 4th round pick out of Kansas State was having another solid season for the Saints, racking up 39 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns through the first seven games. Though Sproles is a running back, he is used mostly as a receiver out of the backfield, hence the receiving numbers. He was also returning kickoffs at an impressive 28.7 yards per return.
Without Sproles, the Saints will be missing an important dynamic to their team. Sproles is a perfect fit in the Saints' pass-heavy offense, and he is also a big play waiting to happen on special teams.
Pierre Thomas will receive most of Sproles' workload in his absence, suddenly making him a very nice fantasy option. Power back Mark Ingram doesn't contribute to the offense in any of the ways that Sproles does, so Ingram shouldn't see many more looks than usual. Thomas, on the other hand, will continue to get the majority of the carries while also taking on the targets Sproles got in the passing game.
Fantasy owners of Sproles need to hold on to him, especially in PPR leagues, as he is a frequent check-down target of Drew Brees when on the field. If Pierre Thomas is available in your league (owned in only 62% of Yahoo leagues), pick him up immediately. If Mark Ingram is available in your league, let's keep it that way - he's still of no value.
