Contrary to yesterday’s reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had hired Paul Ferraro as their special teams coach, the team took a surprising approach towards filling that position by locking long-time NFL head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt on Friday.
Dave Wannstedt spent the past two seasons with the Buffalo Bills, first as a linebackers coach and assistant head coach under Chan Gailey, before being promoted defensive coordinator in 2012. Under Dave Wannstedt’s tutelage, the Buffalo Bills defense ranked 22nd in the NFL after surrendering 362.9 yards per game in the 2012 season. Dave Wannstedt was fired along with former Buffalo Bills head coach Cahn Gaily at the end of the season.
The 60-year-old Dave Wannstedt also occupied defensive coordinator jobs in the NFL with Dallas Cowboys (1989-1992) where he won two Super Bowls under Johnny Johnson, and Miami Dolphins (1999). Before following Johnny Johnson to Dallas, Dave Wannstedt was a defensive coach on his coaching staff at Oklahoma State (1983-1985) and University of Miami (1986-1988). In between, Dave Wanstedt was a defensive line coach at USC.
Dave Wannstedt was also previously head coach with the Chicago Bulls (1992-1998) and Miami Dolphins (2000-2004) following his singles season as defensive coordinator in Miami.
It’s still a curious hiring by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers considering Dave Wannstedt will be taking on his first special teams job in the NFL, since most of his experience lies with coaching defenses. However, Dave Wannstedt did garner some special teams experience while coaching in college ranks as the University of Pittsburgh head coach from 2005-2010.
Dave Wannstedt also has a prior relationship with Greg Schinano, who is the the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ current head coach. Greg Schiano previously coached the Rutgers for six seasons against Wannstedt while he was the University of Pittsburgh head coach. Greg Schiano stands at 4-2 in six career games against Wannstedt while coaching in the college ranks.
Moreover, Greg Schiano also has a past serving, as defensive coordinator for three seasons under Dave Wannstedt from mid-to-late 90’s in Chicago.
Greg Schiano has been known to collect veteran coaches on his coaching staff, who haven’t fared so well as NFL head coaches but still excel in other departments.
