Aye, Papi: Ortiz has epic meltdown after strikeout
I kid, I kid. This story has absolutely nothing to do with performance enhancing drugs, and honestly I wouldn't care if Ortiz was shooting up with anabolic horse testosterone anyway. As long as he's a productive member of the Red Sox lineup, I'm cool with him.
That having been said, Ortiz had a pretty epic meltdown in last night's game, resulting in him getting ejected from the game after arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Tim Timmons. Timmons called two pitches strikes, when Ortiz believed they were well outside the strike zone.
The two pitches in question are pitches number 4 and 5 in this illustration to the right, courtesy of NESN's pitch animator. As you can see, pitcher Jairo Asencio was a bit wild against Ortiz, and two pitches were called strikes even though they were pretty clearly outside the strike zone.
The at-bat ended when Ortiz actually swung at a ball considerably below the strike zone, resulting in a third and final strike. Perhaps he thought it was a good pitch, or perhaps he just decided that he had to swing no matter where the pitch was, based on some of the pitches that Timmons had already called a strike.
Regardless, Ortiz had a few words with Timmons on his way back to the dugout, where he proceeded to smash the bullpen phone with his bat and then come out of the dugout to yell at Timmons some more, at which point he was restrained by manager John Farrell and bench coach Torey Lovullo.
Obviously Ortiz was ejected from the game, but there's no word yet on whether he'll receive further punishment from either MLB or the team.
