“My last at-bat, it kind of pulled back a little bit. You feel that click and you get a little concerned about it. The main thing is to make sure my hand feels fine. I don’t want to be thinking about my hand and my timing - it’s too much.”
- Ortiz
- Ortiz
If Ortiz needs to take more time off, or, God forbid, goes on the DL again, the Red Sox will be in rough shape offensively. After trading Manny Ramirez, Ortiz has already been getting fewer pitches to hit. If Ortiz is out of the lineup for any period of time, the Red Sox will be sorely lacking the offensive firepower that was a huge catalyst behind their World Series wins in 2004 and 2007.
The Red Sox were reportedly testing the Barry Bonds waters about a month ago, and some people think that they should have pulled the trigger. Other rumors included a deal that would have sent Kevin Youkilis to the Braves in exchange for Mark Teixeira.
It looks like the Red Sox are going to stick with what they've already done, which was essentially trading Manny for Jason Bay. Bay has played extremely well for the Sox so far, and as long as Ortiz is in the lineup, the Sox can compete with anyone in the American League.
If Ortiz goes down for an extended period of time, does that mean you can remove the Red Sox from the playoff picture? Are there any solutions out there to replace Papi? Hopefully all is well, because that's one bat that is VERY hard to replace.
