Deadspin editor AJ Daulerio, he of the Will Leitch-inspired buzzsaw ass tattoo, is on a bit of a rampage today, and I think I like it. You see... several months ago, AJ received a tip that something was going on with Steve Phillips, and he asked ESPN about it, and was blatantly lied to.I suppose you can justify ESPN protecting their employees, but Daulerio took issue with the dishonesty. ESPN and Deadspin have had some interesting history, and it hasn't always been very nice. So naturally, ESPN wasn't really interested in letting their dirty laundry out in public.
AJ's response:
"...since the tenuous connection between rumor and fact for accuracy's sake has been a little eroded here, well, it's probably about time to just unload the inbox of all the sordid rumors we've received over the years about various ESPN employees."
So today, he has done exactly that. Of course, everyone was already talking about Steve Phillips, but there's apparently also some stories involving radio host/ESPN.com contributor/jack of all trades Erik Kuselias, Senior VP of Marketing Katie Lacey, and I'm assuming more to come, as AJ empties out his inbox.
Some people are already looking at this and saying that the Deadspin folks are digging their own grave. Some are calling it "burning bridges". Some are "rooting" for ESPN, others for Deadspin. Either way, this could continue to get even more interesting, very soon. Stay tuned.
