Denver Nuggets Front Office Is Giving Up On Team
The Nuggets Front Office Looks A Bit Incompetent At This Point

The Denver Nuggets recently made some big news in trading Allen Iverson for essentially Chauncey Billups.  Some thought this was a good move as it would give the Nuggets some leadership and calm the frantic storm that the Nuggets offense was. Others thought it was dumb because they not only gave up the best player in the trade, but lost long term flexibility in the trade too. Turns out, the others might be right.

The Nuggets are currently facing a big problem. That is, they have no bigs. They traded center Marcus Camby in the offseason for only a 2nd round pick in a cost-cutting move.  The only bigs left on the Denver roster right now are Kenyon Martin (injured with a sprained wrist), Nene, Cheikh Samb, Chris Anderson (out until Thanksgiving), and Steven Hunter (out for an indeterminable time.)  Basically, the Nuggets only have Nene and Cheikh Samb to play in the front court.  Now, they could have Juwan Howard who they let go to make room on the roster for the Billups trade.  However, that move would put them over the salary tax threshold.  They could've kept Antonio McDyess, but that also would've put them over the threshold.  If I didn't now any better, I'd say that the Nuggets were giving up on this team.

Apparently, the Nuggets aren't very happy about the lack of big men on the roster either.  Things were so bad that Carmelo Anthony, the 6'8 small forward, was playing center against Charlotte.  Melo had this to say after the game:

"I was the big man (Tuesday at Charlotte when the small forward played some center). Why not (acquire another post player)? If there's somebody out there we can get, why not?"

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the front office there.  Supposedly even George Karl has asked the front office to reacquire Juwan Howard, but was denied.

So the question must be asked: If the Nuggets aren't willing to make the moves to put this team over the top, why acquire a big contract that they must pay for the next 3 years?  Clearly, the Nuggets don't want to spend the money on this team because they don't believe it can win it all.  In its current shape, the front office is probably right.  That said, if you're going to rebuild, why not keep A.I. and let him go after the season?  Or why not trade him for contracts that come off of the table this offseason and some first round picks?  The truth is, the Nuggets have a nucleus they could easily rebuild around in JR Smith and Carmelo Anthony.  The front office though handcuffed themselves with the Chauncey Billups deal and won't be able to make the big acquisition they would hope to make in a true rebuilding effort.  Quite frankly, the Chauncey Billups deal just doesn't make much sense, unless the Nuggets plan on winning with this team, which they clearly don't plan on doing.

The Nuggets have looked into acquiring Mugsy Bogues, Early Bokins, and Spud Webb.

Dude they're a mess. 6'8" at center? But whatever, Melo's the new T-Mac. Destined never to get out of the first round.

They should see if Antonio McDyess is available.

Oh wait...

The article really had nothing to do with wins and losses.  It had to do with the Nuggets choosing to do the Billups deal which seemed say "we think we can win with this team", when every other move they've made since the end of last season seems to say "we can't win with this team so we're going to cut losses."  If they're going to rebuild, the Billups deal was horrible because they've handcuffed themselves.  If they want to win now, they should be finding themselves a big guy to play.  The conflicting ideologies is hurting them.

I definitely believe that A.I. needed to move on, but the Nuggets could have rid themselves of $20 Million Dollars at the end of the year if they kept him. Chauncey Billups is nice find though because he is un-selfish on team that was full of selfish players....He will bring a championship mentality to that team and most importantly he will provide some stability...Still bounced in the 1st Rnd either way...May be bounced out of the playoffs completely when Dallas and San Antonio get back on track...

But wouldn't it make more sense to wait until 2010 and go after Chris Bosh?  Smith, Melo, and Bosh would be one sick combination.  That would've been an especially good idea if they had traded A.I. for contracts and 1st round picks because they could've added those picks to the nucleus.

No matter how it's spun, this was a bad trade for Denver.  The Lakers and the Rockets got better; the Jazz and the Hornets got more experienced; the Suns, the Mavs and the Spurs are all getting older but are all better than Denver; and the Blazers could very well make the Playoffs this year if Aldrige and Roy stay resonably healthy.  And in the midst of all this, Denver loses their only defensive player in Camby and trades one over-the-hill ball-hog slashing PG for another over-the-hill outside shooting PG without having any threat in the post. (Meaning that Denver was actually a better team with AI than they are with Mr. Big Shot because AI could actually get into the paint to collapse the defense)

I honestly think that Denver will be lucky if they're able to keep 'Melo while sucking for the next 3 or 4 years because he's the only thing they really have worth keeping.

Well, to start Bosh is just better.  I'll take 24 points and 10 rebounds a game from a guy even if he is soft.  He also fills a huge need for the Nuggets.  Also, Chauncey Billups isn't leading this team anywhere important.  The Nuggets could make the playoffs this year and the next.  If I'm the Nuggets I'll trade the next two years for a potential championship contender in a few years.

With Melo and JR Smith, the Nuggets have a couple of prolific scorers who can score in different ways.  Now the Nuggets need to find that third one.  The only thing is that third one needs to offer an inside-outside balance.  Melo has the best midrange game in the NBA, but the Nuggets need someone who can play the post to open up Smith more on the perimeter.  Billups isn't doing that.  Bosh could do that.  Just my $.02.

Its not that you need three prolific scorers to win, but the Nuggets already have two, which is great.  Their problem is that they have no balance.  They need a inside scorer presence to balance the offense.

Well, he's only played in 61% of the regular season games in his career.  Also, Nene isn't winning anybody a title.  He's a nice player, but unless Melo starts having a Jordan-like effect on guys, he isn't cutting it.

STFU....You are the most pathetic piece of crap here on FANIQ...If I want to disagree with you, then I will respond on your comment. What's a PQ gonna do for me? You're an idiot, a loser, and you use negative comments to pretend like you know sports...The comment I made is which you responded of mine actually praised the Nuggets for trading for a more "stable" PG who has actually "WON" and NBA Championship unlike anyone on the Nuggets as of now.  I'm sick of your whining everyday here on FanIQ...Flat Out you are an idiot who be-littles good articles here on FANIQ and I'm not afraid to say it...Sorry to offend any other members of FANIQ, but I've had enough of this fool...

Camby's blocks can't be that meaningless if they won him a Defensive MVP Award.  I mean, they just don't draw a name randomly out of a hat for the winner of the award, it is (hopefully) researched then voted on by people that are supposedly "in the know".

If your PG is your best low post player, you team has problems!!!  I know that Nene is coming along pretty well, but so far in the past he's proven to be almost as fragile as Sam Bowie (**cough** Greg Oden **cough**).  And as for Billups putting up big numbers, the best PG's are in the West.  I haven't seen Billups play against Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Baron Davis or Deron Williams but those guys seem to make old players look really old.

For the record, I have nothing against the Nuggets.  Melo and JR Smith are amongst my favorite players.  Their moves since the end of last season just make no sense to me.
