It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a world-class athlete won't be able to maintain the same cardio activity that he normally does, after sustaining a major ankle injury.
Logically, it makes perfect sense that Jeter, who has been rail thin for his entire career, would gain a few pounds after an injury that prevents him from engaging in his normal workout routine.
Then again, I suppose it's perfectly normal that the New York Post would post a huge back page spread featuring something that isn't even remotely a big deal.

As someone who has been a long time unabashed Jeter hater, I think it's hilarious.
But as someone who is similarly shaped to the new "fat Jeter," I'm a bit offended.
But then again... I bet "fat Jeter" is still getting plenty of female visitors during his rehabilitation. So I guess it can't be that bad, right?

The problem here is when you associated the New York Post with logic.
