Desean Jackson's game winning punt return for a touchdown

The case for punting the ball away from Desean Jackson

Let's set the scene.  A first place battle in the NFC East between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants.  The game is tied at 31 and the Giants are punting the Eagles in what will be the last play of the game in regulation.  The Giants tell rookie punter Matt Dodge to punt away from Desean Jackson, the Eagles speedy receiver/elusive punt returner.  Instead, Dodge makes a mistake that leads to what some are calling one of the greatest plays in NFL history.

Jackson's return caps off a 28 point comeback and puts the Eagles one game ahead of the Giants in the NFL East with 2 games left to play.

The Giants had rthe lead and made up their minds we have this game. then they play like crap missing easy tackles. Even chasing Vick you can see the GIants had a sack but instead of going at Vick he jump to bloack a pass. A PASS seriously, we all know Vick likes to duck, spin and run why would you leave your feet to tackle. It is not the punters fault the whole defense needs to look at themselves in the mirror and take blame for this major meltdown.

The way I see it , is if you're affraid of the big return - why not do like a lot of college teams are now doing and do the rugby style kick .... haven't seen any of those run back in the college games. Besides the Giants should have put the game away when they had the chance .

(Thanks for posting the vid) You can see from the replay that Dodge DID angle himself to the right, but just miskicked it. It wasn't a bonehead play, it was an accident. He screwed up. Granted, he could've aimed more toward the sideline, to make sure the kick went out of bounds, but then a slight miskick could've resulted in something like a 15 yard punt, with zero time subtracted from the clock, setting the Eagles up for a quick pass and a field goal attempt.
Kicking is a matter of inches -- comparable to hitting a baseball.

im glad u pointed that out. after watching the vid, the punter did position himself to punt it right. so its not completely punters fault altho coughlin got in his face like it was. im sure he may wanna yell at the other 10 guys as well

What a bonehead play by the punter! No wonder coach Coughlin is furious with him! Listen; If I were the punter, and the coach tells me to kick it out of bounds, I would kick it out of bounds! Easy, right? Plain as the nose on your face right? That young punter must have had a major mental block! Next time, when its late in the game, and the game tied, kick the ball out of bounds! That punter's mental block cost the Giants the game! Should've sent the game into OT!

Matt Dodge: C'MON MAN!!!

While it was not a good punt that snap gave him no time to get a good punt off. And the punt coverage was awful he did not even handle the punt cleanly and still scored. Good job Gints

im not putting all blame on the punter here, mind u there is also 10 other players on the field with him who i thought could tackle.
