Detroit Lions 2009 NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions are being discussed nation wide because they have First pick in the 2009 NFL draft, that is pretty much the only thing anybody can agree on. A month ago everybody thought Andre Smith was the top contender to be selected by the lions, I wasn't so keen on the idea because of the fact he had missed Alabama's bowl game because he was suspended I thought his character was also an issue. My Concerns were proven right at the NFL combine when Andre Smith showed up overweight and with a serious attitude problem he refused to work out for teams and even left unannoucend, After Andre Smith's disregard for the NFL his draft projection has dropped dramaticly I can only thank god that the Lions didn't make another mistake by drafting Andre Smith. Since Andre Smith is going to be likely to even be drafted in the first round the debate about the who the Lions would select began again and it's being discussed Nation Wide While some believe Matthew Stafford will be selected number 1 others believe Aaron Curry will be selected and most recently Jason Smith has been brought into the Mix. When the super bowl was over and talks shifted to the NFL draft I was one of the most out-spoken defenders of Matthew Stafford I believed that he was the way to go but recently Aaron Curry seems like a strong possibility he is an out standing Line Backer who would easily improve the Lions Defense, Jason Smith on the other hand is a solid Offensive Lineman and would improve the Lions Offensive Line. You can argue all day and some of the most popular arguments is the Lions can wait and draft a QB next year when Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow become avalible, While the thought of having Sam Bradford is undoubtly compelling a lot can happen in a year. You can Make arguments for all of these guys there all great players but what it comes down to is the Lions need to draft to build up there team they don't need to take " The Best Avalible Player". The Detroit Lions are making strives in the right direction they got a new GM in Martin Mayhew and a new coach in Jim Shwartz who i'm not a big fan of but that's another story, Mayhew is taking out the trash he has recently gotten rid of several over-payed underachievers. He has also signed Wide Reciever Bryant Johnson who is a solid Wideout and Maurice Morris who is good Running Back who is an instant improvement over our back-up last year Aveion Cason. The Lions Have a lot of needs this year they need a QB, WR, OL, TE, LB, CB. The options for a QB are unlimted you could Draft Matthew Stafford in the first or wait till the later rounds and select Nate Davis, Stephen McGee or Pat White. If the Lions don't draft a QB there are options avalible in free agency guys Like Kyle Boller or Chris Simms But how can you not love the option of Joey Harrington making his return to the Detroit Lions. It's time for the moment of truth I think with the first pick in the 2009 draft will and should be Matthew Stafford QB.

A coupla things: Andre Smith DID NOT show up to the combine overweight. All you have to do is stop reading errorneous reports at fanhouse and go straight to nfl.com  If you go to combine and click on his name it gives you his height and weigh in - 334 lbs. He will NOT drop out of the first round and if he does the Lions would be FOOLS not to take him at 33.
Stafford will be a wasted pick...I think Jenkins would be GREAT...hard to imagine him slipping to 20, but it could happen.
Iglesias could be a playmaker...Do the Lions need a Punt returner?

The Lions need a punt returner for sure we don't have one at all Iglesias would be an amazing addition next to Calvin Johnson and why would Matt Stafford be a wasted pick?
