I'll be honest. This NFL football season has kind of sucked. A lot of good teams have been worse than expected and nothing all that phenomenal has happened yet. Plus the Patriots aren't as hateable as they were last year. But the good news is that next season already looks like it's going to be awesome. How so?Well, Mike Vick will be out of jail, and he'll need a team to play for. A truly, utterly desperate team to play for, like, say, the Detroit Lions. And thankfully, one long time Lions beat writer believes his team should do it.
Lions insider Tom Kowalski doesn't think imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick is the perfect solution to Detroit's quarterback controversy, but he does think the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback might be worth a look.
"I know the old Lions would never consider it, but you never know with the new Lions that they may think outside the box a little more - I think it's worth a shot."
And I couldn't agree more. Just think of how great the signs would be on the road, and quite possibly at home, too.
But, from a more rational standpoint, it does make some sense, and Detroit should consider it, especially since their current QB doesn't even know how to stay inbounds.
Because let's be honest. America tends to be a forgiving nation and Vick will have done his time by 2009. He also seems to at least be sorry for what he's done, which is the most important thing.
Yes, the Lions will face massive blowback at first if they do this, but that'll subside over time. It always does. Plus Vick will be incredibly motivated to perform. But the real bonus is this: He'll be cheap. I realize Vick isn't the most accurate passer, and he'll have been out of football for more than a year, but he'll be desperate to play (so he can pay off his remaining debts) and for $500,000 a year, he'd be an incredible steal.
The other truth is this. Someone will sign him based on the money reason alone. If it's not Detroit, then it'll be someone else. Because you simply can't get Vick's kind of talent at such a low price everyday. Sure it'll come with some major side issues, but you know it'll be too tempting for at least one owner to pass up. I mean, look no further than Pacman Jones if you think people in the NFL wouldn't ever bring Vick back.
Anyway, we'll see what happens. But you have to admit, Vick being back would certainly spice things up, to say the least.
