It's almost as impossible to live blog a hockey game as it is to call one (How does Mike Emrick do it?), so here's a quick, not-so-thorough recap of what went down at Madison Square Garden last night.

8:10: Puck Drops.

8:11: Some gumballs in the crowd already batting around a giant blue balloon. Is this Game 5 of the Eastern Conference NHL Finals or a Grateful Dead concert?

8:13: Stephen Gionta scores! Jeez, I barely had a chance to open my beer. Devils just threw one on net and he banged in the rebound. 1-0 NJ.

8:15: Patrik Elias scores! I had just enough beer to do a spit take. Rangers coach John Tortorella takes a timeout. he looks calm, like a hairdresser on Valium. I was gonna say Xanax but he looks more like an 80s hairdresser. 2-0 Devils.

8:20: Gaborik misses golden opportunity to get Rangers on the board. His first name's Marian, so we make allowances.

8:26: Devils score again! Unbelievable! Zajac with an assist from Vanna White. And I haven't even had time to buy a vowel. 3-0 New Jersey.

8:37: Prust gets one back for the Rangers! Brodeur has a rememberance of pucks past. (That's one for all you literature majors out there.) 3-1 Devils.

8:47: End of 1st Period. 3-1 Devils. Three goals on six shots. Yikes!

9:05: Beginning of second period.

9:05: What th-??? Ryan Callahan crashes the net and scores for New York! Could have hit his skate. Goal under review. Goal counts. Good call. 3-2 New Jersey.

9:13: Zubrus hooks Gaborik. Power play upcoming for New York.

9:14: Callahan hits the post! Is this Game 5 of Eastern Conference Finals or the All Star Game?

9:21: Prust goes off for slashing. First power play for the Devils.

9:24: No shots for NJ. Although a few probably fired in Newark.

9:33: Rangers living in Devils' end. (That doesn't sound right at all.)

9:38: Another New Jersey power play.

9:42: Power play over. One shot by NJ. Devils power play generates as much power as Connecticut during a snow storm.

9:46: Period over. New Jersey still up, 3-2.

10:04: Third period underway. Rangers score! 17 seconds in! We're drinking Dark n' Stormys now. Gaborik beats Brodeur as he wanders out of the net like an old guy mindlessly ambling away from his retirement community. On further review, he looked more like a 17th Century French peasant strolling the countryside with his lute. 3-3!

10:08: Kovalchuk goal disallowed due to high stick. Nuff said. Damn this Goslings tastes good.

10:10: Rangers fans taunting Brodeur, and why not? Ah crap, the balloon is back.

10:16: Brad Richards almost scores on his own goal! Hope no Columbian drug lords have money riding on this game.

10:19: Rangers all over Brodeur! Best play-by-play guy in all of sports, Emrick, hyperventilating!

10:20: Devils finally take a timeout. Mark the time. No new souls going to hell... or New Jersey.

10:31: Goal! Devils! Carter! Thought for sure this was headed to OT. Still time left though. 4-3 Jersey.

10:36: 1:17 left. Lundqvist out of the net for the Blueshirts. Henrique misses an empty-netter, but Parise buries one. 5-3 Devils. Emrick says: "A meaningful silence now."

10:37: Horn sounds. Game over. Devils win, 5-3. Game 6 Friday night in Jersey. Somehow I sense a Game 7 on Sunday in New York.

Stay tuned.
