This is Micah Owings in college at Tulane where developed quite the reputation for hitting some very, very long home runs.
He doesn't have any home runs this season (4 last year), but it's only a matter of time. He's still raking by pitching standards, batting a robust .308, adding two more hits last night in a Diamondbacks 4-2 win of San Francisco.
Oh, and he pitched, too. Quite well, in fact. 6 1/3 innings, five hits, and two earned runs, earning his 4th win of the season. That keeps Owings on pace with his teammate Brandon Webb for the most wins in baseball.
Any chance they could factor hitting into the Cy Young?
Pirates just need to cast the white flag - After back-to-back 13 runs games against the Chicago Cubs, the Florida Marlins added another double-digit total last night. Matt Morris' ERA is now 9.15 and that's good for Pittsburgh. The only brights spot all season for the Bucs - Nate McLouth has hit safely in every game this season. Marlins 10, Pirates 4.
Did you hear the Cubs haven't won in 100 years? - When you mute the television to listen to Ron Santo, something is wrong. It was as if the ESPN crew last night had never EVER been to Wrigley and treated the viewers as if this was there first ever MLB game on television. Just dreadful. What's not is the Cubs hitting over the last week. You know their hot when Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie deliver the most clutch hits of the night. Best Cubs start since 1985 ... a team that would later have an epic collapse out of 1st place. Just sayin'. Cubs 7, Mets 1.
Chase Utley 5th straight game with a HR - And when Chase hits like this, the Phillies usually win. Utley's MLB leading 9th home run was preceded by this unique Jayson Werth inside-the-park HR. It was aided greatly by the fact Willy Taveras' throw from the outfield hit the ground about five feet after leaving his arm. Juan Pierre was even impressed.
I just worry that if they play Owings in the outfield he will become a star, lead the D-back to some World Series titles. Then the D-Backs will sell him to the Rockies because the D-Back owner needs to back the Off-Off Broadway Show "Cats II Electric Bugaloo". The Rockies will play him in right and he will crush baseballs, nearly die after eating 36 hot dogs before a game, call his shot during a World Series, dump a wife at an insane asylum and start the Rockies Dynasty. Then 80 years and some 20 plus Rockies titles later, fans will say that there is a curse of "Micah".
