Did Chiefs Ask Priest Holmes to "Comeback" and Help With Larry Johnson Holdout?
READ MORE:
You'll see some reports this morning about Larry Johnson backing off his holdout threat. Well played, Carl Peterson, well played.

Priest Holmes may have a true desire to comeback, but I'm on the same page as *gasp* Jason Whitlock this morning. This is a business ploy from Chiefs management, urging and encouraging Holmes to report to camp. His career numbers are just enough to provide a wakeup call to Larry Johnson. But let's not mistake this as Peterson truly believing Priest is going to be an effective running back and replacement. He's 33 and hasn't played in a year-and-a-half.

Let's see what happens over the weekend at Chiefs camp. Holmes will participate in light drills, keeping him away from contact, he'll look fresh, etc. Local and national writers will say that Priest is more than capable of playing this season, and then Johnson worried about his place will report to camp.

If Johnson can leverage withholding his talents against the organization, Peterson can play that game too by dangling a seemingly capable replacement with a big name. Well done, Carl.

September 9th, Larry Johnson will be the starting running back.

If Priest Holmes can be somewhat like his old self, it's a smart business decision, but if he isn't the same this could really backfire in the Chiefs face, because it would show that they need LJ now more than ever. Very risky decision.

I think that Priest has always hoped and targeted this year for a return. All of the work and tests that he has gone through, to get to this point would indicate that it is Priest's decision regardless of any other situation on the team. I am also of the opinion that LJ's holdout and contract talks are stalled because there is very little benefit for him to be in camp right now. Considering all of the touches he compiled last year, a few extra weeks rest won't hurt. LJ is always in shape, any time of year and pre-season should be enough to get him back in the grove. I think that the season will start with a reversal of roles from 2005. LJ starter and Priest as a third down back, spelling LJ at times to keep from wearing LJ down.
