Did Kobe Bryant Turn Down An Agreed Upon Trade Between the Lakers and Pistons?
A Detroit radio station (1270 Sports Animal) is reporting the Lakers and Pistons had agreed to a trade that would have sent Kobe Bryant to the Pistons. Naturally, Kobe turned it down.
Radio station 1270 AM in Detroit is reporting that earlier this week the Lakers and Pistons came to an agreement to trade Bryant to the Pistons.

However, Bryant used his no-trade clause to veto the trade.

Detroit would have sent Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, Amir Johnson and a first-round pick to the Lakers.

The report claims the deal was completed late Tuesday night.
Let's assume this to be true -- why would Kobe Bryant turn this down? That's a great trade for him and the Pistons. Chauncey Billups, Bryant and Rasheed Wallace is enough talent to compete with the Boston Celtics not the mention a big advantage in depth and complimentary players. Does Bryant really want to win?

That is an interesting scenario. It would have been great to see how Kobe and Rasheed interacted. Can't picture that ending well.

i don't see this as a good trade for Kobe.   There isn't enough talent there getting rid of Hamilton and Prince (two studs) with him to compete.

That would've been a HORRIBLE TRADE.   Chauncey Billups is extremely overrated and well past his prime and Sheed is a psychotic PF who wishes he was a guard.  He's better off staying with L.A. and hoping Bynum comes along than going to Detriot and doing nothing and having no future.

Am I the only one that thinks they should just hold on to Kobe and let him play his last two years there, let him walk and then make a play at LeBron or any of the other big time free agents that should be available when Kobe can opt out?

In  Bill Simmon's column he threw out the idea of trading Bynum, Kwame, and Vlad Radmonovich to Miami for Shaq.  I wish that would happen so bad.  It'd give the Lakers three legit scorers with three completely different types of game that would compliment each other.  They'd be an instant contender.  The only downside is that it would create a two year window, but it would open up $20 mil in cap space.

I'm sure Kobe didn't think Detroit was the ideal place to spend the winter.  Typical Kobe behavior, demand a trade then vetoing one since it isn't exactly what he had in mind.  He'd probably only ok a trade to Chicago or Dallas.

Plus, have you seen Shaq recently? He doesn't look like Shaq anymore.

I know, but he can still put up 14-16 points consistently which is exactly what the Lakers are missing.  Him and Kobe have gotten over their beef and their point of contention - who's better? - wouldn't be a debate at this point in time.  Plus they'd be putting the roles players into their actual roles.

As for Miami they'd get one of the best prospects in the NBA, an expiring contract, and a long range shooter.  Considering they are going no where, they couldn't really say no to that.

An extremly objective view. Just curious, is there a trade in which Kobe leaves LA that wouldn't be considered a HORRIBLE TRADE?

Chi-town, Dallas, or Phoenix.  Otherwise he's better off waiting out Bynum.

You are assuming Kobe would be ok with that. He is playing nice now so he can get out of there. The Lakers would be taking a huge risk by holding on to him. What if he pulls a Vince Carter and goes into the tank? He has a no-trade clause and could say trade me to Dallas or I think my ankle may keep me out. I would not put that past Kobe. LA's only hopes of getting anything for him are to trade him sooner rather than later.

Kobe would never tank it like Carter did. Kobe has that Michael Jordan competitiveness sydrome where he wants to win more than anything. I just don't ever see Kobe tanking it.

1) He already has in the past. I forget who they were playing, but remember when Kobe was getting criticized for shooting too much, so he only attempted 2 shots in the 2nd half of a game to make a point. He is not above it.

2) I don't think he'll tank like Vince. He'll either get "hurt" or leave the team. He may finish out the season, but I can't see him reporting to camp at all next year.
