Djokovic ends season with victory after an epic battle against Federer at the ATP Tour Final
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic defeated the Swiss maestro Roger Federer in the ATP Tour Finals to become the champion of the tournament. The Serb showcased a number of masterful strokes to grab a pulsating 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 victory over the world no. 2 Roger Federer.
The confident Serb had to hold up against a fiery barrage of shots from Roger Federer earlier in the game. However, Novak Djokovic slowly took control of the game to end Roger Federer’s reign at the ATP Tour Finals.
The hard-fought battle between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer lasted two hours and 14 minutes at London’s O2 Arena. Novak Djokovic grabbed his second victory at the prestigious tournament, his first coming at Shanghai in 2008.
It’s been a pretty good season for Novak Djokovic. The 25-year-old Serb kicked-off the season by winning the Australian Open in January but lost the finals of the French and the US Open.
“It's always a privilege and a challenge to play Roger,” Novak Djokovic said. “I want to thank my team - I couldn't have done it without you. I love you!”
On the other hand, Roger Federer was left frustrated by his inability to take advantage of some dominant spells in the game. The 17-time grand-slam champion has won the event six times, which makes him the most successful player in the history of the tournament. Roger Federer has easily won more titles and matches than anyone on the court.
However, Roger Federer couldn’t subdue the rampant Serb. Novak Djokovic handed Roger Federer his second defeat in eight appearances in the final of the Tour Finals. Moreover, this was Roger Federer’s third defeat at the O2 Arena.
“Congratulations to Novak on an amazing tournament and an amazing year - you are the best. It has been an amazing year for me too,” said Roger Federer, who at one point in time was the world no. 1 this year.
Interestingly, it was only the fourth time in the Tour Finals 43-year long history that the top two ranked players in the world were put up against each other. The result was a mouthwatering clash that lived up to its hype.
