Doc Rivers Looking to Add Alvin Gentry to Staff
In order for Doc to feel comfortable, he needs to surround himself with the appropriate staff - in addition to bringing former NBA guard and assistant coach, Tyronn Lue from Boston as well as Kevin Eastman, Doc is looking to bring back a familiar face to Clipperland: Alvin Gentry.
Gentry, as most fans know, was the assistant coach under Mike D'Antoni in Phoenix during their glory years with Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire - however, only the Clippers faithful know that Alvin coached the Clippers when they originally drafted Lamar Odom, Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson, a team that was pretty exciting in its own right.
Now that D'Antoni is in Lakerland, selling Gentry on the Associate Head Coach position for the Clippers might be a tougher sell, but because of his former ties to the club, it might just work to the Clippers benefit.
Gentry's ability to mold an offensive strategy around the personnel he has is quite impressive and would be a valuable asset to combine with Doc's overall expertise.
Both guys are very relatable coaches - meaning, they are a players coach. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin can expect to enjoy playing for their coach, something both had trouble with over the past two season with Vinny Del Negro. Rivers and Gentry at the helm would make for a unique relationship between player and coach and would provide that lift this team requires to get to the next level.
