Offense (of·fense), noun - the act of attacking; assault; the means or method of attacking or of attempting to score; the offensive team or members of a team playing offensive positions; scoring abilityThe Rockies and Dodgers couldn't buy any outs last night, as they combined for 12 pitchers, 26 runs, 38 hits, including 13 of the extra base variety. It reminds me of vintage Coors Field, in the pre-humidor days, when routine pop flies turned into gift home runs.
James Loney (pictured) had 5 RBI to lead the Dodgers, and Troy Tulowitzki was a perfect 5 for 5 in the Dodgers' 16-10 victory over the Rockies. Kip Wells, the Dodgers' starter, only managed one third of an inning, giving up 8 runs, 7 earned, on 7 hits. For those of you scoring at home, that's an ERA of 189.00. He was replaced by Matt Speier, who didn't fare too much better, giving up 4 ER in 3+ innings. 11 players had multiple RBI's in this one.
The Tigers put on some fireworks of their own, in a 19-4 clobbering of the Royals. Miguel Cabrera and Matt Joyce combined for 9 hits and 11 RBI, and Zach Miner pitched 6 scoreless innings for Detroit. Joyce and Gary Sheffield homered for the Tigers. Jimmy Gobble had a night to forget, giving up 10 runs in the 8th, allowing the Tigers to completely blow the game open.
The Yankees brought their bats as well, as they opened the game with 8 runs in the first 3 innings of a 12-4 victory over Nick Blackburn and the Twins. Alex Rodriguez led the way with 3 RBI for the Yankees, and at a time when the Yankees learned that they might be without Jorge Posada for the rest of the season, Jose Molina came up big, going 3 for 4. Jason Giambi was the only Yankees starter without a hit.
In case you wanted some contrast, I give you the Cubs and Diamondbacks. Vintage Randy Johnson was on the mound, giving up only 2 hits over 7 innings, to help the D-backs to a 2-0 win against the Cubs. Rich Harden also pitched great for the Cubs, allowing only 1 hit in 7 innings, but it was a HR by Alex Romero. Stephen Drew also tripled in a run in the 8th off of Bob Howry, the only other D-Backs hit of the game. 4 combined hits, 2 total runs, and only 11 total baserunners in this one. Quite a difference from the Dodgers-Rockies slugfest.
