I think anyone who remembers Don Imus getting suspended for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team a bunch of "nappy-headed hoes" figured that after he got back on the air again, it'd only be a matter of time before he said something dumb again. And if you had June 23rd marked on you calendar, then you win a prize.
Imus today had what I'd call a very questionable comment when he was talking about Pacman Jones today on the air.
Newsreader Charles Warner Wolf: ...[H]e's been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005...After Imus says that, Wolf seems to instantly do what he can to change the subject before Imus says something even more questionable.
IMUS: What color is he?
Wolf: ...He's African-American
IMUS: Well. There you go. Now we know.
Now, I'll just say this. When Imus called the Rutgers women's basketball team nappy-headed hoes, the team at least had several white women on it so you could make the rather poor argument that Imus' comments were just ridiculously poor humor - even though we all knew what he meant.
Here, however, it seems pretty clear what Imus is suggesting. In fact, I'd argue this is actually worse than the Rutgers comment, even though I realize to some people this comment might be open to interpretation.
Also, as user forrest_viv points out in the hotlinks section, Imus probably won't get in as much trouble over this because of Pacman's sordid past. Regrettably, I'd have to agree.
