Records are meant to be broken. But some aren't really a record that you would be proud of. The season is young, but St. Louis Rams punter Donnie Jones is on a scorching pace to crush several punting records.Jones has already punted 16 times for 819 yards. That puts him on pace to punt 128 times this season. The record is currently 114. In terms of yardage, he's on a ridiculous pace. If he continues at this rate, he'll finish with 6552 yards. That's over 1500 yards more than the record of 4968, set last year by 49ers punter Andy Lee.
Although Jones is certainly benefiting from the putrid Rams offense, he's not just a compiler. His 51.2 average yards per punt for the season is good for 2nd all time, behind only Sammy Baugh's 51.4 in 1940.
The Rams don't have a lot to be proud of this year, but I'm officially starting the campaign to get Donnie Jones in the Pro Bowl. The guy has to work more than any other punter in football, and he's doing a damn good job.
For the sake of the Rams, I'm sure he hopes the offense won't continue to be this bad, and Donnie Jones loses his shot at these "prestigious" records. But I'm a big fan of seeing history made, so I'm rooting for Donnie.
