Today the Donovan McNabb era may have officially come to an end. And I know many people are hoping that's the case.Despite the fact that laid back Andy Reid lit into his team this week about tying the Bengals last weekend, it didn't produce much at all today, particularly out of McNabb. Despite being in an absolute must win game, McNabb went 8-18 in the first half and threw a horrible pick to Samari Rolle that Rolle returned inside the Philadelphia five-yard line, leading to an eventual Baltimore touchdown.
What's interesting about McNabb's season this year is that it started out extremely well, but some recent uninspiring performances, combined with McNabb's admission that he had no clue that there were ties in the NFL, has made him cannon fodder for criticism.
And the truth is that he deserves it. McNabb's biggest problem has always been that he shrinks up in big games, so we should hardly be surprised that he sucked once again in another critical game.
Also, don't hit me with the "well he went to four straight NFC championships and he made one Super Bowl" argument. That just reinforces my point. You know what McNabb's passer rating in those three NFC Championship loses? 50.5. That's horrible. He also threw two critical INTs in the Super Bowl against the Pats (3 in total) and threw up during Philly's final drive.
I mean seriously, what more evidence do you need? The guy sucks in huge games, and he's getting up there in years for a quarterback. There's no point in sticking with him now that he's clearly on the downward end of his career. He couldn't win the big ones for you 4 or 5 years ago, so what in the hell makes you think he'll suddenly do it now?
But I'm not going to just dump on McNabb. I also believe that it's time for Andy Reid to go as well. He's been McNabb's biggest supporter through the years and if McNabb goes, so should Reid. Not to mention the fact that Reid may be the worst clock management coach in the game.
The Eagles are clearly getting stagnant with a quarterback who isn't going to take them to the promised land and a coach who isn't smart enough to get them their either. Reid's contract is done at the end of the season and the Eagles shouldn't renew it. As for McNabb, he's still in a $115 million contract spread out over 12 years that he's not even close to completing, so it may be somewhat tricky for the Eagles to get rid of him.
But all that said, what should happen is that McNabb and Reid's respective eras come to end after this season. The Eagles came close with these two guys a few times, but at this point in time, that won't happen anymore. If the Eagles ever want to sniff another Super Bowl, then It's time to commit to rebuilding in Philly immediately.
