Dortmund boss Klopp insists Lewandowksi’s fate is sealed with Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp believes Robert Lewandowski will leave the club for Bayern Munich next summer. Robert Lewandowski’s desire to join Bayern Munich is no secret. The Polish striker was keen on moving to the treble-winning German side, but Borussia Dortmund refused to let him go.
It is safe to assume that Borussia Dortmund made this decision in an attempt to curb competition from Bayern Munich next season. Rivalry was another key factor. Bayern Munich, who have already stolen Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund, were strongly linked with Robert Lewandowski soon after the transfer window opened.
Bayern Munich were hot-favorites to land the striker, especially after Jupp Heynckes confirmed the club to close to confirming the deal. However, the progress Bayern Munich had attained turned into futility when Borussia Dortmund announced they would be willing to sell Robert Lewandowski to any club but Bayern Munich.
Robert Lewandowski’s contract with Borussia Dortmund will expire next summer, which means the 24-year-old Poland international will leave the club for free if a deal is not struck before the season ends.
Jurgen Klopp seems to have accepted that fate as Borussia Dortmund and Robert Lewandowski are in a deadlock over a contract extension. In an interview to Welt am Sonntag, Jurgen Klopp revealed he was sure Robert Lewandowski would leave the club next summer.
“I think it is a fact that Robert Lewandowski will join Bayern at the end of the coming season,” Jurgen Klopp said. “What matters now is what we do before that point. That is our concern, and we have an obligation to our fans to ensure we are competitive in the coming season.
“To a point, we were willing to discuss Robert’s desire to move, but since nothing happened during that period, we eventually had to say: ‘So now it no longer works for us’. And now we want to prove we can be successful in the coming year with a quality player like Robert. It is all about our results in the coming season, and I know Robert sees things the same way.”
Despite the impending departure, Jurgen Klopp has urged Borussia Dortmund fans to continue supporting Robert Lewandowski.
“I have great confidence in our fans, but I also know that such issues are put to the test when things are working out,” Jurgen Klopp added. “If we lose a game because Robert misses a shot, you have to stay cool and show that you understand the big picture.”
