Regardless of how much other teams like the Dallas Cowboys are rumourd to be willing to shell out on a top notch coach like Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees doesn’t see Payton coaching anywhere else next season.
Drew Brees believes that Sean Payton isn’t driven by money. Instead, Sean Payton values what he’s built with the New Orleans Saints and hopes to extend his accomplishments with the team by bringing in another championship title after being re-instated following a year-long suspension for his role in the Saints’ bounty investigation.
"I'd be shocked if he wasn't here next year," Drew Brees stated on Wednesday. "I have not even thought for a second that he wouldn't be here, honestly. Not even thought for a second."
Although Sean Payton is signed through 2015, there have been widespread speculations about his contract status especially after the league expressed concern over certain language used in Payton’s extension last season. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell believed that the opt out clause in Sean Payton’s contract, following New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis’ departure from the club allowed set a bad tone for future coaches.
Given Sean Payton had a successful tenure as offensive assistant in Dallas from 2003 to 2005 and boasts good relations with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, many reports claimed that Payton could be taking helm of the team if current head coach Jason Garret is fired after another disappointing season. It would be convenient considering Sean Payton’s children already reside in the Dallas area.
However, Drew Brees won’t recommend predetermining facts about Sean Payton’s parting of ways with the New Orleans Saints when such reports are based on anonymous “sources” with no sound backing.
"We also know how the whole sources thing works, don't we?" Drew Brees said. "Sources can pretty much say whatever you want them to say because you never really have to be accountable for it. Like I said, I'm not worried."
For the better part, Drew Brees’ teammates seem to agree with regarding Sean Payton’s return next season.
"What everybody thinks is that Sean will be back. For right now, Sean Payton is our head coach,” New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins stated. “Just like a player has a contract that has to work out, there's going to be negotiations and that whole situation will play out."
But’s its hardly a subject that seems to be clouding the players’ minds with the New Orleans Saints facing the Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers in their finals two regular season games.
"We would love to have Sean back, but that's out of our hands," expressed New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas. "That's between Mickey, Mr. Benson, and him. That's not between us. We can't have any say-so in it."
However, the contract issue has even been broached in Dallas this week, where Jason Garrett is leading the Dallas Cowboys to a five-game winning streak and at the brink of playoffs contention after a shaky 3-5 start earlier this season.
"Certainly, as coaches and individuals, we have to live with job uncertainty and speculation. There is always a lot of stuff going on on the periphery,” Jason Garrett said. “(But) I'm focused on doing my job as well as I can."
That requires a much needed win against the New Orleans Saints followed by a miracle over the Washington Redskins to guarantee the Dallas Cowboys a playoffs spot with a 10-6 record.
