According to a Louisiana TV station, Drew Brees and the Saints are very close to a new contract, and are hammering out the last details that will get Brees back on the field with the Saints in a deal that could eclipse Peyton Manning's recent deal with the Broncos. From the article:
"As early as Friday morning... or at the latest by Monday," [WWL reporter Kristian] Garic said a contract could "very possibly" be signed.
He says, "The two sides have really closed the gap, and it may be just minor details at this point."
Garic reports it will be in the neighborhood of $20 million dollars for the first two years.
"It is going surpass Peyton Manning's average of $19.3 million annually." Kristian's information says it will be a five year deal.
So we're looking at a 5-year deal, in the neighborhood of $100M for Brees, who has been one of the top 3-4 QBs in the league.
Based on how Saints' OTAs are going so far, including fights between backup QB Chase Daniel and defensive players, it's definitely a huge bonus for the Saints that Brees could be taking the field shortly.
It's about time the Saints and Brees came to an agreement. I think everyone knew it had to happen (for both sides), and neither of them really had any other viable options.
Brees deserves his huge payday, and it looks like he's finally going to get it.
